Squealing Blower Motor, and renewal of Micro Filters
Decided to change the micro filters myself today.
Paid £25 for a set of them, and spent all of 5 mins, removing 6 screws and popping the new ones in. 2 mins to reset the CBS on the dash & done. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E81-2-7-8-...item27b89409d7 I can not believe the quotes people have had for this to be done ... my daughter could do the job, it as easy as changing an air filter on an old Fiesta. Anyway my Fan had started to make a squealing noise too, like the sound of a Hamster in a metal wheel ..... very annoying. When I took the Micro filter cover off, you can clearly see two inlets where the air is drawn into the cab from the filters. On the Passenger side one, looking in (they are quite large inlets so easy to see in), the Blower Motor is as clear as daylight to see. Looking at it I could see the centre pin/spindle was rusty ....... something I have read about before, and after looking at what is really only a micro filter to protect it from moisture, its easy to see why it rusts !!! Anyway, quick squirt of WD40, left for 5 mins, then ran the car up with the fan on full, and another small squirt, and no more squealing at all. Quick fix, for what I think is a bad design. I had mine out today, people really shouldn't be scared to pick up an 8mm socket and 1/4 drive ratchet!

Dry fan motor bearings are a common problem - as you've found Craig, a simple squirt with WD40 and all's well
