tint ticket
I got a ticket for window tint by CHP yesterday. He gave me a fix-it ticket, so it's all good. I had 5% tints and deserved it anyways
But, I want to re-tint my car after I get it signed off. I was wondering do cops bug you with 20% tint? I know that they don't care about 35% but that's just too light. Input???

They got you on the freeway? I heard they pull you over for 35% still.

Tint laws are BS. They should just make it a law to roll down your windows when you get pulled over, then we could enjoy this harmless mod. They say it's for their safety, but you have to be stupid to approach a vehicle that you can't see into, so what does it matter anyways?

CHP is actively enforcing CA Tint laws. Usually this type of ticket is issued at 'officers discretion', - meaning they can choose whether or not to write the ticket. Since the financial crisis has enveloped the city and state - everyone is trying to increase revenue.
I have a huper 40% which allows for very good visibility inside & out, while knocking out almost all UV rays and almost 80% infrared heat. A month ago I was pulled over by a CHP officer and he didn't write me up because he said it was light, but also warned me that someone else would probably write me up. They generate a lot of revenue from these tickets (we're talking millions a year). A small group of us is actively looking at getting the law amended to allow up to 35% all around - very similar to the legislation that was passed in Illinois last year. I'm all for officer safety (have a cousin who's a cop) but I'm also for protecting my health as well, the interior of my car while being more energy efficient. If you guys are interested in changing the law, we can start another thread and go from there. Otherwise we can keep on paying for the tickets....BTW, the fine itself is $178 - $190. If you remove the tint then go to court, it's about $25. Even at $25, removing tints putting it back on, going to court and all the time you put in - it starts to add up. 5% tints is not smart bro, and it's not safe. There is no percentage of tint that is allowed in CA on the front windows (driver & passenger). Technically it's 70% VLT (visible light transmittance) for the front windows which pretty much means clear. Even the best clear tints don't knock out most of the UV rays and virtually no infrared heat, meaning more A/C usage and less energy efficiency. Here is a good article on police raising the tint fines to increase revenues. This is the new legislation that was passed in Illinois allowing 35% tint all around. I hope the information above helps.

Good input. What was the price for allowing 35%? I can't imagine they just decided to lower it without anything in return.

What made them lower the allowed tint? Higher fines for those that go below that? I'm just saying I wonder what would make California lower it if they got nothing in return, considering the financial situation.

an environmental issue, lower emissions since the A/C would be used significantly less. It's not going to be an easy battle, but not an impossible one either. Some groups in the state could fight it, CA could gain by actively going after illegal tint as opposed to the way the law is currently enforced.

I got a ticket for 35%. I have beige interior too, so it doesn't look as dark as someone with 35% and a black interior. Be careful out there..

Eh.. Cali Tint Laws =
Front windows cannot have ANY film whatsoever that decreases the visibility through the window or increases reflectivity Rear windows can have tint (%) of any degree BUT they cannot be any color other than black (no blue, yellow, etc.) AND it cannot increase reflectivity. If you tint the fronts it looks nice, but you're just asking to be pulled over one day. |

My mom has a black/black 550i and has about 35% all around. She has had the tint for a few years and she has never been stopped. I guess it could also depend on the cops in your area... |

20% is still too dark for sure. Trust me, personal experience I had 20% on my E92 in the past and it was raining and a Sheriff pulled up next to me at the light and I had rolled my windows down just in time and he puts his window down and is like "you know its raining.. aren't you cold?" and my response was "aren't you?" lol

great response bro! so what can we do to get this law passed? some kind of petition or something? also, i do agree that modded cars are more suseptible to getting pulled over, as well as the age of the driver. young guy + modded car= pulled over for stupid shit. The thing that frustrates me is the fact that my windows were ROLLED down as I was approaching the officer, but he figured if it was raining why would I have my windows down. Anyways, the financial crisis in Cali is horrendous and they want to make $ somehow. I think I might get it redone 35% on the fronts and see what happens, since my friend has had 35% on the front windows for 3 years and never rolls them down near cops, and he lives in my city. So we'll have to see...haha

What you can do for now is find out who your assembly person and senators are based on your district. Be respectful when you get pulled over and get rid of the 5% tints I'm glad that you folks are interested in changing the law, and for the record - I'm 31 without any mods other than tints and 3m reflective tape over my amber reflectors. Very basic changes to my car. Don't be easily discouraged, people are dying around the world for the rights we already have. If you really want to change something, you can. Over the past 200+ years systems have been put in place to allow those changes to happen. Just remember that we're approaching this issue as a health issue first, a green solution second, and a protection of property issue third. Hopefully over the next month I'll have more information gathered (we'll start a new thread) and we can get the mods to make it a sticky! BTW - I had my tints for 2.5 years before I got stopped - things are changing... I'm really happy some of you may be willing to help change the law.

go with 20% and just keep your windows down all the time. I have 15% tint on jet black and I love the look, but it is taking the chance of getting pulled over sooner or later.
