Does anyone here own Shiba Inu?
I'm getting an 11 week old Shiba puppy on the 5th and I have a few questions for anyone who has experience with owning this breed.

Have wanted one but don't own one. Lucky! Hard to come by. Is it a purebred?

From what I read they are pretty high maintenance and very temperamental, so not a good breed if you have small kids.
Also heard that *some* of them can't bark, so instead they just snap their teeth. Looks pretty funny. I don't own one, so can't talk from the experience.

Make sure you have a high fence as they are escape artists.

We have had the dog since he was a puppy. My to youngest siblings were born while we had the dog and he did just fine with the pulling, and tugging that toddlers do with pets. He is extremely mellow and loves to just sit on the couch with you. We joke that he thinks he is a cat sometimes.
The escape artist part is absolutely correct though. I can't even beging to count the many times a door was slightly open for a minute and he would be out and running. Always comes back, but a huge pain trying to keep him in the house/backyard. Doesn't bark very often, but always running toward noises. No real tips, he was the easiest dog we ever had to raise. Potty trained quickly and always obeyed. ![]() |

Shiba Inus are known as very cat like, needs a lot of attention/exercise (as most dogs do witih exercise), intelligent, and can be protective.
With all canines, consistent training is the key and training at an early age helps even more. All these tendencies are just behavioral traits but usually proper training is the key. It is not easy. TS - Is this your first dog?

I know a lot of sites say "not for first time owners", but people are generally pretty stupid and unprepared, thus the sites must cater to the lowest common denominator. Haha |

I'm sure you know all of this but they make a real mess when they shed their second coat. There is one in my complex that seems quite unfriendly and doesn't like other dogs at all and we find the hair all over the place. That's my only experience but I haven't spent very much time with them.

I'm hoping that some vigorous brushing during the shedding period will help keep most of the hair off of my furniture lol |

Good luck with that one. I remember a friend had one back in the day. You would see clumps of hair in the sewer at the end of the block after it shed. What a mess. Cute. But what a mess.
