Question Brief transmission slippage. Should I be worried?

It all started once I left work today for my drive home. At about 2 minutes into my drive, the transmission service symbol came on and noticed that when I hit the gas pedal it was revving way above normal and it was taking its time to shift to the next gear. Almost like it wanted to shift but it also felt like the tranny was slipping or it was stuck in gear.

I take the interstate home so my average speed was about 60mph and the car would not shift out of 5th gear. I knew this because I switched over to DS and when I shifted up it changed to 6th gear. Kept the car at a constant speed (55-60mph) and hit the gas a few times to confirm that it would not shift gear and I was only over revving my gear.

Once I exited the Interstate, at the next stoplight I put the car in park and shut it off. Waited about 15-30 seconds, turned it back on and the Service symbol disappeared as well as the "slipping". The car than was back to normal and I had absolutely no issues with shifting in both Auto and DS. I was freaking out during the drive but was completely relieved once it fixed itself.

Should I be worried?? Has anyone else experienced this type of situation? My only conclusion which I can assume is that I started driving too soon and the tranny was still too cold and somehow effected gear shifts, temps outside were about 37 degrees, I work near the ocean so temps and winds were definitely below freezing. Car was parked for a good 9 hours.

What mods do you have?
Have you ever changed the transmission fluid?

I am learning a 30k tranny flush is VERY important preventive maintenance. I'd get it flushed before you really need a new tranny. BMW "lifetime" fluid my ass. Just about as long-life as that 15k oil change interval lol.

lol did a search about this "lifetime" fluid. And your response pretty much summed up what I found.

I had the same issue a few times, but only after doing several power-braked launches, and especially after doing them with 2nd gear full-throttle starts

Yes, it was stupid and I did it anyways, but it seems unusual that your car would do that when driving normally.

I also occasionally got the issue when I got on it when the car was cold and it was quite cold outside, so maybe that's it?

Havent done any power-braked launches recently or ever in the Bimmer, Im gonna go on it being cold outside was what created it. Drove the car this morning and definitely gave it a little time to warm up before I even dared to hit the gas above normal. No problems with it at all

Could be a software issue. It probably threw a code, so you'd need to get that code read. However, if you haven't even changed your tansmission fluid, and your at 60K, your transmission is knock, knocking on heavens door. Go buy 9 Liters of Pentosin ATF, and go to a local shop that can hook up your car to a fluid exchange machine. Swap out all the fluid, ASAP. Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Been driving around all day and no signs of any problems with the transmission. Gonna head to a local shop that specializes with BMW just to be on the safe side.
