Bluetooth Technicals

So I looked through all the topics in this forum and couldn't find one that helps...

Verizon has a new phone coming out, the LG VX9800, I think by the end of this month. Does anyone know what technical aspects of Bluetooth need to be available to ensure that the phone will be fully compatible with the BMW Bluetooth feature? In other words, phone software version, Bluetooth version, etc.

I know that BMW has a list of compatible phones, but I don't know how long it takes them to test a phone once it's available, so I'm hoping there's a way a person could tell beforehand if it will work.

And of course, hopefully somewhere here will buy one and test it before I decide to buy one

The phone should support both the Handsfree or Headset bluetooth profile as well as the OBEX profile.

OBEX is what allows the phone to transfer the address book to the car, and is routinely blocked by Verizon.

Verizon is not blocking OBEX, both 710 & 815 transfer address book, so should that new LG.
Verizon is blocking another profile that's not used in BMW, which lets you use phone as a modem or transfer files to PC or other media

So I think next time I will do a little more research before I post

For Verizon BT users, check out the following two links:

http://dts.vzw.com/how_to_use/bluetooth_car_kit.html

The above link will tell you, by phone and then by car company, the level of functionality for your Verizon BT phone.

http://dts.vzw.com/pdf/bluetooth_chart_handsets.pdf

The above link will tell you, by phone, what level of BT support a phone has.

Unfortunately, looks like the VX9800 won't support the ability to sync the phone book with the car. But, it does call the phone VX9800 Launch, so maybe they'll release a software update to "uncripple" the phone sometime later (stupid Verizon...). Take a look at the V710 as an example.

Great links though, very handy. In any case, I would not get the LG, it's big, ugly and VCAST is useless. I would always get SE before LG.

I think I might just get the E815, since everyone here who has one seems to like it. The VX9800 just seems cool, because of the keyboard and bigger LCD inside. Oh well!

depends what you use the phone for. E815 got very good reviews, but if you intend to type a lot - then it'd be hard. Otherwise, if you don't use the internet a lot, don't need to keep to many songs and don't sent too many SMS - e815 is fine and will work with a car.

they have blocked OBEX on the majority of their phones in the past. that's why you see so many people complaining about not being able to sync their phonebooks to the car. maybe they've started to change their policy.

This phone issue has actually turned out to be beneficial for me. While I'm sitting here waiting for my car to arrive (it can't be here soon enough, but at least I've got my E46 to keep me company until then!) I can at least be distracted by trying to find the perfect phone for me and my E90

As an aside, I sent an email to Verizon asking about why they chose to cripple this new phone. The response was as expected: apologetic, but didn't give a reason why. All they said was that they might release a software update in the future.

What does your post have to do with the subject of this thread, which is the LG VX9800?

And why hijack a thread from 18 months ago?
