My car eats engine oil.
Is it normal for a 335i to need engine oil every three months or so? I take it to BMW and they top it off, and three months later I am on low again. Is there something wrong with my car, or could it be effected by the fact that I have no oil cooler? I'm on CPO now, so they don't fill her up for free any more
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! Edit: Problem fixed. It was the oil filter housing gasket.

I'd say that in my 15,000 miles of ownership it has been topped off three times now. 4 times including today.

Probably this in conjuction with the hot weather causes that. But here, a friend of mine has a 320i which was overheated due to waterpump fail, and the piston seals shrinked, which caused "eating" 1 liter 5W-30 BMW Oil every 2000 km!!! The other "bonus" worse MPG and slight loss of power.

I just took my car in for this issue. I was loosing a quart even more often than you. They ended up tracking it back to the oil filter housing. Take a look at the lower gasket.

It has been under maintenance warranty so I just bring it to BMW and they fill it up.
Does anyone know if BMW will fix this for me under CPO? I asked the SA to check it out yesterday and he said it's normal....How can I make them do the work? Thanks in advance guys.

That's abnormally high usage/loss. In both my 99 540 Sport and 335i Sport with oil changes at 5-6K, never experienced oil loss sufficient to require adding a qt. If your not getting blown out the exhaust, then you've got a leak somewhere.

If i've got a leak, wouldn't it be visible on my driveway where I park? I have never seen anything on the ground left from my car.

Change the type of oil, they might be putting in 5W-30, which is for cold climate countries. Try next time 5W-40 or 5W-50, it might just do good in Florida. If isn't the issue, then do an inspection for internal leakage and if there isn't anything visible...open the engine, check piston sealings, vanos actuators, camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings, valve seals, all the gaskets and etc.

not necesarrily. my car leaks oil but its not a crazy leak so it just hangs out on the plastic undercarriage cover. going into the dealer tomorow they said it should be covered by CPO.

is ur car under warranty? If it is just take it to any dealer. but like others have said it might be an oil leak - it might not. for the record tho its going to BMW Houston North.
I know mine is an oil leak because when I got an alignment we could actually see oil that had leaked all over the undercarriage cover. took it off and saw multiple places where it could have started. |

As far as my burning oil issue goes, I don't know exactly what the problem is. It never burned any oil (50,000 miles) until the following 3 things happened. 1: I moved from an extremely cold climate to an extremely hot climate 2: I switched from BMW oil to Mobile 1 3: I am driving a lot less. My trip to work is about 5 min one way. I rarely bring the oil to the operating temperature. but I will call BMW north and see what they can do for me. Thanks again |

if you go to BMW north - request for Jermaine Owens to work on your car. He is a master-tech there and is working on my car as we speak. This way - if you have questions you can actually talk to the tech instead of a stupid SA

You want to solve this problem? Change ur oil every 5k miles!!! Motor oil tends to break down and burn after 5k miles on motors with turbos. If your leasing it dont worry about it but if you bought and you plan on keeping it awhile do yourself a favor change ur oil sooner.

I change my oil every 5K -- BTW - My car is fixed. The leak was from the oil filter housing gasket, just like the guy a few posts up. Last edited by youngnastyman; 03-11-2011 at 10:54 AM.. |
