Bought a used e90. ok to drive with temp registration but no current tags?
i just bought a used car and i payed the registration and got a temp registration sticker/id or w/e from the dealer. the problem is that the old license plates have expired tag stickers on it. is it ok to drive like this? i payed the registration but i just dont have the current stickers yet. should i just take the license plates off completely or should i drive it with the expired plates?

Did the car come with dealer vanity plates at all? If it did, I would just run the dealer plates until you get your new sticker. If you run with either the expired tag or no plate at all, you're asking to get pulled over for it. When I bought my car (CPO) the plates were in the trunk and the tag was 1 month expired. It had dealer plates on there though and the temp registration on the front windshield. The tag came in a couple weeks.

cops go by what is in the system, not whats on the car. if they can get close enough to see the sticker, and see it is expired, they will run a check on the car.
i bought my car in Feb. 2011, removed the temp restration on windshield, and had a cop directly behind me at a stop light, i can see him typing on his computer... never got pulled over. |

just drive carefully, but a cop can pull you over if he wanted too

Had the same situation as you, I left the rear plate with expired tags on and gambled, I never got pulled over...
Even if you do get pulled over, once you explain you have the registration on the windshield you are good to go... What you need to worry about is parking enforcement, because you aren't there to defend and point out the window sticker, so removing your rear plate can help you avoid that situation. |

You can drive with expired registration stickers in California. As long as the temporary registration is affixed visibly, i.e., the lower passer side of the front windshield. Make sure the dealer/salesman number is visible. In case you do get pulled over by a cop, direct him/her to the temp registration. You could remove the plates; its like driving a new car in terms of paperwork. I believe the temp registration is good for 90 days (since CA DMV is understaffed).
In terms of parking enforcement, they are just going to pull your car info by VIN if you don't have visible plates.
