Brand of Gas

what company do you guys usually choose to pump with?

personally i only go with Shell's Vpower oct 93

i've tried BP/Cheveron with Techron/Racetrack etc

so far, the engine responds best to Shell and the mpg has increased. 76 is fairly good as well IMO

I use only 76 100 octane in the E92 just cause it's the only local high octane I've been able to find...

for my other vehicles it's:

Mobil
Shell
Chevron

in that order...I know a little bit about it as I work with various energy companies (transmission pipeline and refinery line testing)

I pulled up to a Shell station tonight since their gas is highly praised on this forum. I was disappointed to see V-power 92 octane?? That's the first time I have seen 92 octane. I am not sure if all the Shell's here are 92 octane, but premium around here is always usually 93 octane. I will have to check out some of the other Shell stations. I guess I will stick with Sunoco and 76 for now.

There are several "independent shippers" such as Kinder-Morgan who own and maintain transmission pipelines (interstate) some are "gathering lines" that ship the more raw products to individual refineries for mixing of additives depending on the region, etc...the product within the host line are also changed and can vary...pushing jet fuel one month and "partially-refined" crude the next.

In addition, companies like TOSCO (76), Exxon-Mobil, BP, etc... also own their own pipelines (interstate as well)

So in answer to the first part of your question: yes, it is possible that a shipper could be transporting the same raw product to a variety of cutomers...depends on specifically on the area around the country/world and is not always the case.

I'm not sure if I understand the second part of your question...

San Diego's 76 has 97 octane, and that was a luxury...hard to find anything about 93 these days

to be honest in my friends lambo he just puts costco and it really doesn't show much of a difference. i think its more long term then on the spot difference.

Octane makes a bigger difference in turbo cars.
An NA car won't feel the HP loss that a turbo car will.

But, when using crappy gas or lower octane you will get some HP loss.

I only use Shell or 76 and all we get is 91 craptane in Cali.........

All fuel is mandated to have a base amount of additives to keep the engine clean. The bigger companies (Shell, Chevron, etc.) put in additional additives right before it is delivered to their retailers. Bottom line, Costco is fine in that all the fuel comes out of the same pipelines. It will not have the extra additives but in my opinion they are not that beneficial in newer cars.

I try to use only Sunoco 93 in my cars. If I have to Ill use Mobile 93. A lot of the stations around here have been changing to Valero and Ive tried their 93 with no ill effects. I personally dont like Shell or BP/Amoco.
