The Simple Rules of the left lane

Posted on another forum but think this sums it up nicely:

Sit in the left lane as long as you want provided:
No one is behind you
You're going faster than the people in the lanes to the right of you.

If you're one of those people who thinks the posted speed limit is any tool for justifying camping in the left lane, ("it's 55mph zone and i'm going 80, these people shouldn't be going any faster than that") just kill yourself.

If a person behind you with no one in front doesn't mean exactly you're in the wrong. It seems 50/50 for me that when I move over, the person behind me was fine going the speed I was going and I end up moving back into the left lane due to slower right lane traffic or the person does want to go faster than me.

Either way I do move over to see if he/she is one of the people who want to go faster.

This is why I'm seeing if my dealer can install missile launchers on the front of my car.

You should carry the speed in the farthest right lane as you can, and move over to pass. If the person behind you is just cruising there at the same speed, they are wrong

What if you're "cruising" in the middle lane doing 62 in a 55?

This is rules of the left lane! I tend to stay as far right as I can going the speed I want to. Usually puts me in the middle lane around 65

Yeah but the middle lane is still left of the one right lane (or more), so the left lane rules should still apply as long as you've got traffic lanes to your right.

middle lane /= left lane because there is no passing lane for the far left lane...far left lane is the passing lane. Right (2) lane(s) for trucks, slow traffic. Middle lane for driving, left for passing. If you're constantly passing everything, stay in the left as long as you want. If you can carry the speed you wish in lane to the right, go in that lane.

There could be up to 6+ lanes in a lot of places though. I still maintain the "left lane rules" should apply to any lane that is relatively to the left of another lane.

Yea it gets annoying...it seems it always ends up being like 2 3lane highways...

As for staying in the left lane even if no one is behind you I disagree I still get in the right. I have a friend who is a state trooper and he said if they're are 2 cars coming down the road he will laser the one in the left, so even if no one is behind you and you are riding along with someone going the same speed as you in the right lane you should get over whether they are ahead or behind you. On top of that I know its LA state law that the left lane is for passing only and they can give you a ticket for being all by yourself in the left lane while going the speed limit.

So the question is. What state has the most left lane violators?

My vote is, Texas. They have zero concept of the left lane.

In the big cities, especially Houston, I could not agree more. The further out into the country you get, the better people are about it.

Hah. I have seen tractor trailers cruising at 55 mph in the left lane here in NY. Cabbies, trucks, sketchy vans, even Prii: for them, the left lane is more of a right lane than the right lane. The result is the utter chaos you see in the NYC region.

While driving a prudent speed in the middle lane the other day, I was passed on the right by one of those 1980's Ford Transit vans - he must have been doing at least 85-90. On the west side highway. At night.

I was driving home from LA to Phoenix last week. I was in the middle of passing a typical semi while I was going about 80. While passing I check my rear-view mirror and a semi just like the one I am passing (full on, full load being carried) started taking up a lot of real estate in my mirror fast. He ended up passing me at about 100 mph. That was a very scary moment to see such a large vehicle blast by me in a little Hyundai Accent...

Hawaii.

Where idiots in SUVs drive 40mph in a 60mph zone on the left lane with bumper stickers saying "THIS AINT THE MAINLAND, SLOW DOWN." ...and they flick you off when you pass them or speed up so you can't get in front.

But why do you speed? Why use the left lane? Is it that you guys enjoy violating the laws established by speed limits?
