Tyre explosion

Yesterday I had the winter tyres exchanged for my summer tyres.

My summer tyres are Continental Premium Contact 2, Dot 1910, 175/65/R14 bought in August 2010 and about 2000km wear.

After profesionally beeing fitted to the rims, one of the tyres exploded while one of the workers was trying to balance it on the special device.
The tyre not only exploded but the steel belts were also ripped in two places.
The wheel service center gave me a spare tyre so I con drive until I sort out the problem with the company I bought the tyres from.

Here are some photos:

What do you think? Manufacturing defect or something else?
