K&N for my 335i coupe

i was reading that a cold air intake and so on will not make any or alot of power for this car... but i wanna put a k&N drop in filter with the stock housing.

any thoughts if this is bad or good..
i actually put it in my big v8 benz and gave it a bit of a nicer sound and a bit more throttle/snappy power.

also my air filter gets really dirty fast so its easier to clean than tossing the old one out or going to the dealer all the time. i like my stuff in top notch condition

I've used K&N filters in a couple of cars. No problem with the filter itself. But how is it easier to clean, rinse, air dry, and oil the K&N rather than just pop in a new OEM filter?

do they even make a k&N filter for the 335i yet? I was trying to find one when i first got the car but had no luck.

If you find one please point me in the right direction..I would love to get a K&N drop in.

Ive always used a K&N filter whether it works or not. I just feel more comfortable having it there. Put one in my bike too. In terms of the poster who asked how easy it is to rinse and clean compared to a stock one. You really dont ever have to. They are pretty much good for 50,000 miles before you need to clean it.

Sure..., come to Tucson,AZ, I want to see that air filter lasting 50000 miles.

I am not going to challenge you becuase I don't know what type of car you used the K&N filter and in which condition and location but everyone on this entire forum would agree with me that cleaning a K&N filter every 50000 miles is extremely excesive.

ya dude holy shit 50k miles id say thats a bit excessive...
I stand behind KN products for sure they are great! they clean out perfect as new every time in under 30min with there cleaing kit. Why buy a new filter when u can just clean the one u got??
I really want to find the KN for the 335 drop in filter as well... whether it gives me a difference or not!:rocks:

Joe335i,

A cold air intake does not work the same way in a turbo car as on a N/A. The reason behind this is because you can have freezeing air coming into the air filter of a stock turbo but no matter how cold it is it will rapidly heat up inside of the turbo compressor and piping before leading to the intercooler which ultimately will cool it down again.

On a turbo car, the way to get the air cooler into the engine is through the intercooler, the material of the pipining and how well all these components get ventilated.

Unlike on the turbo cars, the cold air intakes are far more efficient on the N/A cars because the air goes straight from the air filter through the maf/mas and into the TB so the coldest the air the better.

Like I said before, having a turbo (twin)and an intercooler directly in the path of the airflow it just changes the temps up then down.

Im not sure I understand your sarcasm. Why would the K&N not last 50,000 miles in AZ? Also, why would cleaning the filter every 50,000 miles be excessive? Thats what its specified. Of course you can clean it at 100,000 miles if its not dirty. I think every 50,000 it needs to be reoiled, whether or not its dirty is another thing.

Secondly, I live in NJ.

From the K&N site:

Quote:
A K&N Filtercharger is a high-performance air filter, both in terms of air flow and filtration. However, the service interval can vary widely depending on the severity of the driving conditions. The service interval can be from 100 miles in a desert-racing environment to 50,000 miles for normal street use. The proper way to determine when an air filter needs service is with an air restriction gauge. Such a device is commonly used on heavy duty trucks and construction equipment. A restriction gauge, measures the pressure differential inside and outside the filter and gives the information in different forms of measurement. As the filter collects more and more dirt, the restriction value increases. At a predetermined point or rate of restriction, the filter is serviced. The maximum allowable restriction for a K&N Filtercharger is 15" of vacuum (water). If the restriction is allowed to go higher, the filter media might become so restricted that the element could distort allowing dirty air to bypass the filter and enter the engine. Conversely, cleaning a filter too often will shorten its serviceable life expectancy. Installing a restriction gauge will optimize service intervals and take the guess work out of your maintenance schedule. {emphasis supplied}

Ok, so when you go racing your 335 in the next baja 1000 Ill agree you might need to clean it sooner...Highly doubt the roads in AZ are the same.

Ahh HyperM3, you are a master at point-missing. But, seeing as how you're married to your position, I'll just wish the Irish Blessing upon you.

It is always better to start off with the coldest air possible, a cold air intake will make more power on a turbo car. Ask any knowledgeable tuner.

50,000 miles seems excessive. I pull out my filter every 3K miles and just blow it out with compressed air. Maybe every other time I will do the cleaning with oiling afterwards. It's simple to clean.

K&N drop in if available should help the engine breath better especially since it is turbo and requires more air. Cotton filter will flow better than paper.

On normally aspirated cars, the increase on the butt-dyno should be minimal if any, since it might be 1+ hp

usually for turbo cars the filters doesn't really make a difference
