Strange question as the N54 has an oil separator built into the valve cover.
So, is the question really who has added an occ? This is from pages 10-12 of the sticky at the top: http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...9&d=1165592709 "N54 Crankcase Ventilation The crankcase ventilation system on the N54 engine is unique due to the fact that this is a turbocharged engine. This means the the intake manifold pressure will be higher than that of a naturally aspirated engine. This presents new challenges regarding the design of the crankcase ventilation system. The basic description of the system is as follows: • The system uses a calibrated orifice to meter crankcase vapors into the engine • Liquid oil is separated from the crankcase vapors is done by “cyclonic” action • There are 2 channels for crankcase vapors depending upon the manifold pressure • Most of the system components are integrated into the cylinder head cover One of the most important features is the fact that most of the system components are integrated into the plastic cylinder head cover. This allows engine heat to warm the crankcase vapors which prevents any potential freezing of any water vapor trapped in the system. In contrast to the N52, there is only one heating element located at the intake manifold inlet. Cyclone Separator A cyclone oil separator is used in the N54 engine. Here, four of the described cyclones are integrated into the oil-separator housing. The oil mist drawn in from the crankcase is set into a spinning motion in the cyclone. As a result of the centrifugal forces, the heavier oil settles on the cyclone walls and from there drips into the oil drain. The lighter blow-by gases are sucked out from the middle of the cyclone. here is a pic of a separator that I used
My car is a ton faster... should I say, more responsive to throttle input, with the stock hose removed and this in its place.
got to remove the foam filter first!

DIY oil seperator vented to air. Only cost me $60. It would have cost less had I not wanted AN fittings from the performance shop.

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of peoples' intake valves who are using an occ vs. a separator. An separator people care to pull their intake manifold to do some cleaning and snap some pics for the community?

I just put mine on about 5 days ago so my valves will probably look terrible anyways. They have 37,000 miles of non catch can use.
With any vented to atmosphere setup, there is no possible way for any oil to get back in the intake(other than the 2nd idle/cruise pcv track built into the head) because its completely disconnected.

Yeah- I'd like to see how you built and installed your seperator.
Also, have you considered running the outlet hose to the exhaust tip? Maybe using something like this... It's a check valve and a pipe to go into the exhaust tip. You'd pull more vaccum and put the smell and fumes out the tailpipe. |

This oil separator approach seems interesting to me, so obviously I have a few questions. I currently use an occ.
- what happens on the air intake side? Do you just cap it? - since the air is no longer being pulled by the air intake, does this cause any problems? - can I just vent my OCC outlet and cap the air intake side? The potential benefit of the oil separator setup is less crap on the intake valves.

Not having the air intake pull a vaccume on the PCV is not a problem. Although it does aid in the removal of the blow-by gasses, it is not needed. When the crankcase pressurizes under boost, the pressure will push it out of the occ tube regardless. Yes, you can just vent your occ to air. Ive seen several people use a manufactured OCC vented to the atmosphere and cap the intake port.

I am having issues with crankcase pressure venting properly. I have a 1/8th bottle neck in the cap of my separator.
