Plonker exhaust question
This is probably a silly question but here I go.
I have a 335i and when the car first starts and is parked only one of the exhaust pipes seems to be puffing. The car works fine when I move off. |

isn't there a valve that opens up at 2/3k rpm, this opens the other port up. There was a fix on my 130i that had you put a nail/golf pin etc in a vacuum hose and that ment it was always open

No port. Both should work together!

Does it "puff" from the right hand (driver's side) exhaust as you look at the back of the car and not the left?

Perfectly normal, its supposed to do that as part of the emissions management.
Listen carefully and you will hear the valve opening up on the other exhaust when the car reaches its slow idle. Yves |

I have previously read about this in other posts.
As already mentioned, is an emission thing, plus to reduce noise at high tick over. I think I also read it is possibly to let engine rev's get to idle. Along with the golf tee fix, you can also disconnect something in the boot near one of the rear light fittings to stop it shutting off. Last edited by wza; 04-06-2011 at 03:39 PM.. |

When the car is cold and on enrichment (cold start) map, the NS exit pipe is closed. The reason is primarily the noise, its very loud when cold and on fast idle. I noticed after fitting the Bastuck pipes (no flap valve) how loud it is on a cold start. You can pull off the vacuum pipe at the exhaust and plug it. But hardly worth doing as it only functons in cold starts or extreme cold weather. Do NOT remove the electrical connection though, you may well find you generate an error code.

Diesel is different then. Both plume steam from cold.
Must look shit with only one doing it for while.

I always wait until the second pipe opens up, I figure that also gives the engine enough time to finish it's "odd ignition timing phase" (for want of a better name). I'm not keen on puting any load on the engine when it's firing at 30° past TDC.

Well thanks for the replies everybody. The car starts on one orifice and then parps on both after a while. Nothing wrong with it and behaves just like its owner.
