Dealership waiting time

Just a quick question. So I ordered my 2011 AW 335I last Saturday, and the sales rep still hasnt emailed me a single piece of info. Does that mean its going to be delayed beyond the 6 week time frame? How long did it take you guys from building the car at the dealership to getting a chassis number to follow online?

You got the exact same car as me and 6 weeks wait time is pretty good. That's about as good as it gets I think. I was originally quoted 3 months wait time from my dealership, but now cut down to a little over 2 months now. It took about a week to get my VIN # from the dealer, so you should have it soon. My car's finished and built, but just sitting around waiting for a ship to get on and dealer has no info on that yet. I know the feeling man, waiting is killing me. I can't wait to get my hands on the steering wheel.

If you didn't specify the M-Tech steering wheel, I suggest you buy one now and hold that until your car gets here. Then change out the stock wheel, youll get the feel early and love it even more on the car!

I think what you need is the production number. Without it, you have nothing. At least when a new model comes out, like the E92 in Sept. 2006, the dealerships have each and every allocation sold for at least 2 mos. So they start playing a game of me and my uncle, seeing who walks in through the door. Who will pay list? 4 customers. Who wanted $500 off. 8 customers. We made 4 more deals at over $1000 off, etc. In other words back then, they are selling cars they don't have, and lining up buyers.

I wouldn't think that's the case today, but then again, they only have so many allocations, and so many cars on the lot.

In my travels what's different about BMW v. Japanese is WBABWxxxxxxxxxxxx is your car with your name on it at the mfg. level. What ties you to that car, is the production number. So you need to have one given to you by the CA. I was given the runaround by my CA, that I didn't need anything as the car was almost 8 weeks away. I said no, I need something in writing because otherwise I'll order somewhere else. So once I got that number, online, it showed as a loaded sapphire car, when mine was space gray. Wondering if I had fallen to the bait and switch, I got my first exposure how what shows online is going to be wrong and never up to date. Lots of things where you'd assume BMW is advanced, they're not!

Long story short is you "ordered" your car a week ago. Is it in the BMW order system in which case your CA can show you on his/her screen and print it out for you, or did they take an order but not have an allocation, and they will put the order in when they have an allocation...i.e. it's sitting on someone's desk collecting dust...

Get the production number and order sheet ASAP. When I got my order sheet the idiot had an auto trans when I had specified manual. If I had not been on top of it, I would have been very disappointed when I picked up the car.

In addition, I've ordered two 3 series coupes since 2000 and they both took 8 weeks to delivery through the NJ port to MD. 4 weeks from order to date finished on the assembly line, and 4 weeks to get loaded on the ship, sail across the ocean, go through the nearest VPC and arrive on the truck at the dealer.

I tracked the ship last time in 2007.

6 weeks is terrific. I had to wait a few days short of 3 months when I ordered a BMW.

Damn. Both dealerships I talked to claimed it wouldnt take more than 6 weeks. Did they make the same promise to you? I think its because they had some that were already in production, but could still be built.

no they didnt make a promise, but then again i didnt bother asking turnaround time as i thought it was pretty much the same for every dealer. these dealers have production slots, so one dealer might be able to get it ordered and built within a week, others might take 2 months to get it built/

I still don't think you have done enough. For example:

I went to the dealer, ordered the car and put a deposit on 3/12/2007.

3/12 - I got a hand written sheet with the production number listed, and the negotiated prices for the car and options before I left the dealership.

In addition, they did an order print out (vehicle inquiry report) for the production number showing a production status of 047, Spec. released - no and a priority of 1, Customer Sold, and all the options listed for the order.

3/29 - I got a letter in the mail from the dealership. I noticed on the letter that the production number had changed from the original, and then looked at the enclosed "Order Modification Confirmation Dealer" sheet to see the car and options, and production status code (111 - order accepted), and the future production dates in the factory. This is how I found out the transmission was wrong, and I had the 3/12 sheet to prove it.

My suggestion, if you haven't, is call back and get the production order number. Tell him you want to use the BMWUSA owners site to track the car status by the order number. With the production order number you can go to the bmwusa site and sign up to get status updates on your car, you can also get the VIN when it is assigned to the order number. Here you create your account to do things including, "track new vehicles from the factory to your driveway":

https://www.bmwusa.com/secured/conte.../Register.aspx

The VIN also becomes the cargo id number on the ship that carries the car and you can see what ship it is on and what date it will arrive at the port.

On this page is a link to Track and Trace by VIN: http://www.2wglobal.com/www/customercentre/index.jsp

Getting the production order number is the key to everything. Do not take your sales representatives word for a delivery date, or configuration/options confirmation, get the production number and see for yourself.

Oh sorry I wasn't more clear. The first thing I asked him about was the production number. There's no way in hell I would just do nothing for 5 more weeks. He said he would email it to me in the next few days. They had to do a dealer trade to get one that is in production (he explained this to me before I bought the car). Sounds like he just got that taken care of. If I don't have a production number by Wednesday I'll call him again.

Excellent! I enjoyed this part of the forum for the tracking guide, order status reference chart, and just a crazy bunch of people waiting for their cars:

Hey Mango,

You probably have already done this, but make sure you get shipping info from your CA. My 335 will be delivered to me next week but the 800 number still says I am "waiting at the port for a shipping vessel". The BMW website says I am at the VPC.

i will ask him sometime next week. i also got the vin number and looked it up on the shipping website and nothing shows up, so i assume i missed the boat. if you go over to the m3 board there is a thread with some users who's cars have been waiting at the port for close to a month.

Hi all...

I ordered my 2011 335i X-Drive (M-Sport package) on January 29th 2011, and received the car on Monday April 4th. It has arrived on March 28th, but i was traveling for work. So in all fairness to the deal I would have had it a few days sooner than I did.

About 4 days after ordering the car the salesman called with the production number and instructions on setting up an account on the BMW website to track the cars production status.

Good luck...

Rich

Hey Mango,

If you are on a WW ship, then you can track it via VIN. But, my 335 was on an unpublished ship called the grand legacy. The only way I knew about it was by contacting my CA and asking him. That seems like a really long wait at the port and I bet your M3 is on a ship right now. I will jump over to the M3 forum and read what you are talking about.

Cheers,

Wow, that's a long time (sorry to rub it in). I ordered the same day, took delivery on March 29 (six weeks on the dot from when I ordered it).

I was between a 335i and a 335is, decided the is was more than I wanted to spend. Dealer told me afterwards that the 335is would have taken longer to deliver. But you're approaching eight weeks now. Expect +2 weeks minimum from when it gets on a ship to getting to the dealer.

hey - my car is still in 'production finished' status on the website, and when i call the 800 number, it tells me that its at the port awaiting a shipping vessel (since 4/4).

but....i contact my CA today and he told me my car did leave the port on 4/9....so i'm guessing the phone/website just haven't been updated. you should try the same...maybe you did get on the same ship.
