No oil in my 335i

I have a 2009 335i coupe with 5 years free servicing. After a spirited drive today the oil symbol came on.. I nursed it home for the next couple of miles and checked the oil level on the computer. It says minimum please put one litre of oil in.

Have I done any damage to the car?

Will BMW top it up for me free of charge as I have the 5 years free servicing.

If not which oil do I put in and where will I get it from on a Saturday night/Sunday morning?

Cheers Jim

Just buy a litre and top it up, you won't have have caused any damage.

BMW will not pay for your oil, just go to a BP garage or Halfords and buy from there, not the cheapest but you do need to top it up sooner rather than later.

You need Castrol Edge but not sure as to the grade, probably 0W 30 but check instore.

Why not?

Seems quite clear to me that they *will* pay for oil topups between services.

I've done about 5000 miles in my 335i so far and not used a drop of oil according to the display.

Can't say any cars I've had used oil except when my turbo was knackered on a previous car.

I'd be a little concerned losing oil on such a new car.

Is the 335i prone to using some oil?

How often do you check your oil?

Even if BMW will top it up for free, it will be a lot more hassle than you just going out and buying a litre top up bottle.

bmw 6 cyl engines in my experience, owning 2 e46 330's and a z4 3.0 si have all used oil to some degree, do some research, its in the bmw spec somewhere that 1l per 1000 miles is not uncommon.

I must say that most of the cars I've owned do say something similar in the handbook, just never had any cars doing so.

You don't have "no oil" in if it reads minimum on the display, probably still a good 5 litres in it!

The M54 is notorious for burning sometimes comical amounts of oil seemingly as normal, but the rest of the range is not, IMHO.

What you dont know is the OPs mileage, age of the oil, or driving style.
All affect oil burn rate.

Add to that the rather innacurate electronic dipstick, and who knows?
I filled the car up after a change, ran it and saw a full oil display in iDrive.
After 20 motorway miles and some hard driving - low oil warning.
The dipstick isnt too good, so maybe it was short filled, from experience it's very easy to do.

Give me a dipstick any day of the week.

I've posted before my concerns about a sensor checking the oil.

What happens if it fails or does not pick up the oil level correctly?

I'm suprised that BMW will supply top-up oils as part of the service package!

I need 1 litre every 4.5 - 5k miles and always keep a spare litre in the boot as it's hard to gauge when you need to top up with the electronic dipstick

You lose a bit of oil pressure from surge when hard cornering.
That'll trip the pressure alarm, and I suspect a limp or shutdown?

I bought a 2001 Merc truck that had no dipstick.
Its mature technology and suggests its very reliable, if not very accurate!

Sure, but it's not very convenient if everything grinds to a halt in the middle of nowhere, with no mobile phone coverage.
I'm with those who prefer a good old-fashioned dipstick.

UPDATE: Has anyone got an email address or phone number for BMW customer service?

As can be seen on the attacvhed link I should get oil top ups free.

http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/servicepa...4ubmV0,00.html

I phoned my local BMW garage and they stated that It wasn't included as I didn't have service inclusive plus.

I am going to have to buy a litre for now. The guy at the garage said to buy 0W - 30W. The Cestrol is either 5W - 30W or 0W - 40W

Why not print that out and take it down to them?

You can get Castrol Edge 0w30 - it's what I put in my car.

Or : http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-716-cast...ngine-oil.aspx

It's only 10-15 quid.

I've just topped up with a litre of oil and it says it's full now. Lucky I didn't buy a bigger bottle as I was going to put a few litres in. I don't suppose there's anything to worry about, I must have used a litre of oil in 10k miles.
