My boss just told me.."don't be a b..tch..just get everything"
I'm putting the deposit down today at noon and I was going over the car with my boss and was telling him the items I didn't get..Active Cruise/Steering etc. He says..."shit..just get everything, your not married, better get it all now until you've got the wife saying...don't get all those fancy gadgets"

He knows the more you owe for your car, the more he owns your butt!

But dont get stuff just to be getting stuff. Get the stuff you really want. I would never have taken active steering just to say the car was loaded.

I would say get all you need, get some of what you want, and nothing that you do not want or need. Oh yea, factor in what you can afford as well.
Then, tell your boss that you would "love to get x,y,z as well" but the bank account will not allow that (even if it does). I did that once, and got a well timed bonus for going "above and beyond" on a little project that I did a few months earlier. I got that bonus on the day I placed the order on my car. He knew I was going that day, and when he handed me the check, he said "Good timing, huh? Any clue what you are going to spend it on?" and walked away... |

Good advice. I'd go further and say that a new car is something you buy after you've got a couple of properties together. I remember 20 or so years ago my parents bought a house. At the time, I remember thinking that the house cost almost exactly as much as a new Mercedes 560SEL. How much would a 1986 Mercedes 560SEL be worth now? The house is worth €3,5M. A bit OT, but worth thinking about nonetheless.

Just passed the 3 year mark of my first house. Good advice though. That's pretty much why I kept my Audi for 7 years. Having a house payment really changes you spending habits. The good thing is the house payment stays the same while your income goes up so now I can swing it.

Good point... UNLESS you're "lucky" enough to live in one of the housing markets where property values are STILL soaring. My mortgage stays the same, but my lovely county keeps jacking up the appraisal for my house... another $50k added this year. While this isn't a bad thing (at all) in the long run, it DOES keep jacking my monthly payment up to cover the escrow balance. Add that to the fact that I just found out that I'm not exempt from paying personal property taxes on my car since it's a lease (which adds another $139/month to my lease payment).
Sorry, had to get on my "taxes blow" soapbox for a minute... Quote:

Person A buys a second house, borrows 400k. Monthly repayments are 2k, rental income is 1,500. He funds the shortfall of 500/month out of his own pocket. Over the following 3 years, house prices rise by 10%pa. 3 years later his house is worth 532k. Rents have risen too, so he's now paying maybe 400pm instead of 500. Person B buys a new car, pays 500/month. The real cost of that car (in lost income) over the 3 years was closer to 130k. It's a no-brainer, really. Last edited by Anan; 03-15-2007 at 04:47 PM.. |

skip the active cruise, but if you can, get everything else!
Try and save up for the house as well, now that I am on my second house I figured it was okay to spend a lot of money on a car

Your boss obviously understands a fool and his money are easily parted, and he's practicing on you. Get everything, ok. Because you're not married why go through a sensible decision making process. It's like going to a buffet and eating until you can't get out of your chair, only your boss told you to do it because it's not his own health.....

He should've told you to quit being a bitch and get go get a real sports car! If you're single and you're plunking down money on a fully optioned 3 series you can afford something much hotter. Live it up while you can.

Reminds me of my good friend who tells me, bitch just get the BBS LMs. I quickly remind him that he gave his wife (newly married) his car and is now driving the Honda Accord.
