Longer start problem..=[

Hi guys

After a spirited drive with my friends m3 tonight..my car takes longer to start than usual , normally it start when i press the button but now it takes 3 seconds and it sounds like the engine was on the edge of dying but then it ignites..

Is this the turbo problem? i also heard a little rattle when it came on.

Please shed me some lights

thanks

A long crank when starting the car indicates a failing high pressure fuel pump; which is a very common problem on 335i's.

I noticed that when I turned the ignition on and let all the lights come on and go off and then start the car, I never had a long start. Whereas, when I put the clutch down straight away and push the start button I sometimes get a longer cranking time.

Most 335is that I've heard are a bit rattley on startup and when cold. If you can hear a rattle when you accelerate and then let the revs drop to idle, then it is a problem with the turbos, usually the wastegate actuator.

The dealers will only replace the HPFP (that's if you're still under warranty) if you have an error code so there's not much you can do until you get an engine management light.

thats not necessarily true. their was a recall on the pumps so you can go in and if your car is part of the recall you get a new pump. and to answer your q, is the rattle right when it starts and it sounds like a chain dragging for a few seconds? if so thats the left exhaust flap and not the turbos. if the noise is coming when you rev and then let the rpm's drop and you hear a rattle, thats the turbos.

Yoro, its the start of the HPFP failure. It manifests itself on cold starts AND after heatsoak (i.e. a good thrash!)

The dealers won't / can't do anything without fault codes OR it failing some test routines they will run on the car.

I ended up videoing the long crank on a cold morning after dealer had said they couldn't change it because it passed all their tests.

Immediately they saw the video it was booked in for a replacement under warranty as they said they could use the 'customer evidence' to justify the work to BMW UK.

Take a look - this was enought to mine replaced:

Not strictly true, there will be codes stored in the ECU without the CEL coming on. Guarantee it.

Take it in and let them diagnose it.

This is the thing, sometimes they do start perfectly with a failing fuel pump. Depends on ambient temp, how it was last run etc etc.

Have you got the software that primes the LPFP first? I had that done a few months ago and it made the starting issues worse!

Needs to go in for diagnosis.

My last new fuel pump was not throwing any error codes but was dying never the less.

Cheers
