Help! I messed up big time. Airbag issues/steering wheel

So i was taking off an mtech wheel and i was in a rush and did not have one of the plugs disconnected... When i took the wheel off the center piece behind the wheel unspooled... see pics below. I tried my best to get it back in the casing but apparently it had ripped the connector bc now all my dash lights are on. I am currently driving without the airbag attached bc I am afraid the messed up electrical connection will somehow set the airbag off and i don't want to take that risk. Anyone know what this part is called? I can't find any part number on it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You disconnected the SZL, hence the Brake light, DBS and DSC you are probably getting. It's a $700 part if you broke it, lets hope not. Get her to the dealer or mechanic and suck up your pride and say you made a boo boo.

On other cars, it's referred to as the "clock spring" and yeah, it's expensive

I would take it to the dealer first to confirm that is the issue and part you need.

Now that's a boo boo you don't see every day. Good luck in fixing it, hopefully it doesn't put a huge dent in your wallet.

I almost pooped my pants when I installed my procede for the first time and broke one of those male connectors off, luckily it was easily soddered on until I was able to get a new one. I can only imagine how you feel. Let us know the results.

so RaceyBMW and I were looking at this part on Real OEM... isn't it just part 03 in the diagram behind this link?

$147 dollar part from realoem and their price may be a bit high.

It's $119 and tischer...

So maybe not all hope is lost.. i tool the szl module off... and it's fine.. the only thing that is messed up is the "spool" that is inside the top housing (see pic 2 and 3 below). Surely this can be replaced without buying an entire new unit for $550?! As you can see the connector is fine on the one end.. it's torn on the end that attaches to the airbag portion.

Any thoughts

This might be a stupid question but is there any chance of u just cutting that flush and soldering the connector back on?

You need to replace the SZL. Also when you replace it, the car has to be reprogrammed as well

I'm taking the column pieces up to BMW tomorrow and seeing if indeed I can just replace the spool. It's just a connector, so i don't see why an entire column would have to be replaced just for the spool. Nothing else is broken except one end of the spool.

Update: Car is now fixed!! Ordered a new spool cartridge from Tischer @ $119.00 (local bmw was $203). Got the part in, clicked on in 2 mins, and cleared the airbag and seatbelt lights. Car runs perfect and thank god no more lights. The dash has been lit up like a christmas tree for the past 2 weeks.
