New Shoes for my M6 reps?
OK, I usually wouldn't ask this but I will. Looking for new shoes for my AW coupe and M6 reps. I'm a little torn between the Falken FK 452, Toyo TR1s, and General Exclaim UHPs. I like the first two because of the rim protection and the Generals because of the Tire Rack survey and price. Anybody had or seen all of them on a car and got any advice? Gotta order next week.

I would get the toyo as I have read nothing but good things about them. I have had toyos before (T1-S) and was happy with them. All of the tires are decent so I would not drive myself crazy over this.

I got the General Exclaim UHP tires for my reps. The way I see it, you can pay for a name or you can pay for the highest rated summer performance tire which is.....tada
By the way, did you get the car yet? I thought you had to wait an extra week?

I would consider the Generals if I was going to get 19" wheels, but are they really an all season tire. Has anyone actually driven in snow with them. Yes I know that dedicated snows are best. But I am torn between getting 18" tires and rims with REAL all season tires or 19" wheels with the General exclaims that are not a REAL allseason tire, I like the look of the 19" tires but I want better wear than the usual summer tire. Plus the 19" tire patch is not so good for snow. BTW, I don't usually need to drive to far in snow. Only on a rare occasion. I comute 1 mile to work and have an AWD Mountainer to use when it is really snowing.

By the way, I did have to wait an extra week. Car arrived on 2 Mar and I picked it up on the 9th. Actually haven't had much time to drive it...been sitting under cover most of the time. Got the aero lip at the paint shop getting painted now and should have it installed Mon or Tues. After the Trendix fiasco, I've decided to stay away from the rear spoiler...at least for now. Actually, I like the look of the car w/o. Also, if I hadn't purchased wheels already, I think I would stay with stock. I actually like the look of AW with the 189s. Oh well, don't feel like going thru the hassle of trying to find someone to sell them to so going to sit it on 19's in two weeks once the weather clears up. Also ordered the brushed aluminum E-brake handle from Crown so I think that might be my last mod for awhile. Got lots of refurbs to do on my house so I'd better focus on making money instead of spending it. I'll send pics once I'm done. Take care and hope the word is good for you guys on Iraq and you don't have to head back. |

I have an alternate suggestion:
Toyo Proxes 4 - They are a true all season tire but are also very high performance. I have a set on my MINI Cooper S Cabrio and will be putting a set on my 335 i vert. You cannot beat them for performance, wear, ride, and noise. Just my 2 cents. Check them out. Good sources are: Edgeracing.com and Buywheelstoday.com If you don't plan to drive in temps below 25 or any snow, the Toyo T1s are also very nice. I had a set on my first MINI and they were great until it got cold or snowed. Then they sucked big time!

Just to let everyone know that GENERAL TIRES = CONTINENTAL
Sister company for CONTINENTAL to get into the average price range instead of high price only.... So quality is as good as CONTINENTAL which most up scale German cars use

i have 245/275 Toyo T1Rs on my M6 reps. I love them. Good grip and pretty quiet. The car is quiter on HR sport springs and these tires than with the 18 inch runflats.

The Generals are a Summer performance tire, however they are rated for light snow use. And no i wouldn't choose them for the snow or heavey rain. I've had them on my car for about a year now, in the rain its been fine, but then again I live in California where the rain is mild, nothing like say Seattle. |

I was going to reply to that as well. I've only heard great things about the 452s. I think he might be considering the 451s or the 512s or something. Heard the 452s were top of the line. However, think folks have convinced me of the Generals. I'll try them and hope for the best.

Wait, it's OK to use budget tires? No seriously, Folks here get slammed left and right for ANY attempt at buying anything less than the Top of the Line Name Brand Forged this or Gold that.
But it's OK to wear "General Tires"? Aren't these the same tires we used to see on the Farmers trucks? Shouldn't this be all about the New Pirellis, Michelins, Dunlops, or Goodyears? Hell Fuldas maybe??? I'm being silly yeah, but I would HAVE never even given General tires or any other alternative brand except maybe Yokohama's a second look. Toyo? Where's their racing experience, decades of Engineering? Falken??? Not on a bet! General Tires? Nope, accept on the Ford F150 maybe... Surprised to see these brands mentioned. So, I guess what I am asking is that 1. You all have researched your Rubber and Find these tires to be acceptable performance alternatives? Tread Wear, Load, FEEL? 2. You trust them out in the canyons and on the road where your tires are your lifeline? 3. It's acceptable to run budget tires on your BMW? 4. Did I miss the freaking tire bus while out playing on Motorcycles? Not being a dick, just kinda surprised, hell happy even to find that there are maybe some decent alternative to $350 a piece tires. I've been focused on the Conti Sports, GoodYears, and Yokohama's, hadn't even considered the others.

Hmm, after reading just a little bit at General's (Continentals) web-site they sound a whole lot like Metzler Tires. I wonder if they are related and if their Hi-Silica tread compounds are comparable to similar Metzler Sport tires...
Sorry Don't mean to Hi-Jack. Go off on my own thing....

I think you are far mistaken on the Generals. While they are not the most expensive tires on the market, they are amazing for the price in terms of quality, treadwear and performance. Not to mention, they are the sister brand to Continental so there is a reputation behind the product, even if Generals are not a known brand.

And far be it for me to rant and scream that all BMW owners should only allow forged wheels to touch their vehicles. I don't appreciate that type of snobbery. Although I am getting a set of forged wheels myself (MORR CSL Replicas), I wouldn't insist that everyone else should only get top of the line products simply because it is a BMW. That same type of logic would suggest no one should get a 323i, 325i or 328i because they are "lower" models. Extending that same logic, one may equally argue that one should not even buy a BMW but save the money for a Porsche. That's nonsense. There are lower priced products like the Generals...like the 323i, 325i or 328i that provide good performance at a reasonable price point and are a better value to some. So is it acceptable to have Generals UHP tires on a BMW? Why not? The Generals seem to be a great tire...low price, good treadlife and good performance. They're related to Continenatal (sister company) so they likely will not suddenly disappear into the night if you have issues in the future. Of course if you want even MORE performance...it seems that buyers say that Goodyear Eagle F1 G3-D3 and Michelin PS2 are even better but at (especially with the PS2s) higher price points. The question really ends up being this: is it worthwhile to get a Goodyear Eagle F1 or Michelin PS2 over a General Exclaim UHP? How much of a performance difference is there between Generals UHPs and the Michelin PS2s? This is hard to tell. It is likely difficult to measure any performance differences unless you make direct comparisons on the same vehicle. Most users will only purchase one set of tires and will not be able to make these types of direct comparisons. TireRack does tests but they are limited. Furthermore, they do not do direct comparisons between the General UHPs versus Goodyear F1 or the Michelin PS2. You will note that on the online survey they categorize General UHPs as a Ultra High Performance tire, while tires like the Michelin PS2 and Goodyear Eagle F1 are ranked in the Max Performance Summer tire category. So basically...how important is it to you that you have the most highest level performance from your tire? Can you live with a tire knowing that its well balanced and a very good performer...but not necessarily the absolutely best performer? If so...then get the Generals. I still haven't decided myself. |
