Lessons Learned From UK3

UK3 was great. It had its hiccups but overall it was great. Now for planning for UK4. So, here's my list of lessons learned.
  1. If you are going to have a barbeque in England, especially a gas-fired one, bring a windscreen (and I don't mean curved pieces of laminated glass).
  2. If you own a portable gazebo, bring it. So far it has kept the weather at bay and mine is still in its bag, never used.
  3. If you bring lanyards for your nametag, bring enough for the whole class.
  4. While it is hard to get an idea of who is going to actually show up, the nametags worked well except the guests. OK, only one guest didn't have one and she really didn't need one.
  5. If you're plotting out a spirited drive, let everyone get the route into their SatNav BEFORE the first car leaves. If going by waypoints, since BMW SatNav doesn't support these, allow for multiple route entry.
  6. Have a printout of everyone's cell phone numbers.
  7. One again, never follow Viv.
That's what I can think of from where my hair used to be.

One other thing learned: if you phone Viv he suddenly shows up.

Things I learned:

- Make sure you wake up before leaving for UK3 (sorry Paul)
- At the garage, don't put £1 in the vacuum machine when you need air, vacuums do not inflate tyres very well
- Canadians and Brits are very much alike in their views
- When trying to lose fellow members in a convoy, drive faster, I just could not lose them
- When your passenger hangs onto the door handle for dear life, it means slow down
- When you see a tractor, motorbike by the side of the road, or indeed any hazzard... speed up, you will soon pass it by
- Overtaking is fun
- VW Passat's are slow
- Remember to brake when you reach corners (always forget that one)
- I do not believe Bakewell tarts come from Bakewell, I didn't see any
- People in Hilton (a village) are very old
- There is only one restaurant in Hilton, and it serves you long time
- Remapped 320d's are a b*stard to shake off
- Never ever, ever, ever, unless you are really insane... follow Viv

I wasn't even driving when we went too far along the A50!

I'm just like any traffic warden Floyd - I'll show up when you least expect it!

I've never asked anyone to purposely follow me!

As for the driving past the correct exit on the A50, it was my brother who was driving.

Strangely enough I think he did try to lose Matt & Floyd after turning around at the next roundabout!

Also Paul, the only reason Canadian Paul seems to have similar views to yourself, is because he was sh*tting his pants in your passenger seat- he was was nodding his head to anything & everything you were saying!

I've also learned 350z's are pants- I think everyone overtook that car on the second stretch of the drive.

You may have a point there Viv... Paul was agreeing with most things I was saying!

Paul, you forgot.....

- When an eighty year old starts to give you the eye, leg it to another pub so Pads can try and pick up a Thai waitress.

What I learned:
- If your try and convoy more than five cars you'll end up getting separated and will approach your destination from three different directions.
- When you pick up the camera for the 1st time make sure you haven't left any daft settings from the last time you used it.
- When Paul (beauforty) floors it soot comes from Paddy's exhaust.
- When it's breezy put weights on everything you don't want to go flying onto the nearby roads.
- Viv can't navigate even when he's got a chauffeur.
- 20 free spaces and the ratty old 205 will choose the space next to your car.
- Park 4 E90's in a line and an E46 M3 will grow into the next space overnight.
- Paddy will arrive for breakfast 1 minute before they stop serving.
- Someone needs to follow Viv to tell him when he's lost!

As you can tell Matt, I've learned nothing from UK1 or 2!

It was great to meet you again Pads, mi' old mucka!

The funniest part of the weekend for me was when you were scribbling something on your hand, pretending to ask the Thai waitress for the bill- we all know you were trying to get hold of her phone number!

OK, here's one more that I just thought of after reading all these other posts:

While Viv is lousy at navigation even when given voice directions and graphics, he does organize a pretty good meet. My hat was off to him most of the weekend.

Thanks Floyd.

However, I'm just the 'dictator'- I couldn't do much without the help of yourself, Matt, Paul & the others.

Without your plate covers, BBQ & gazebo for a start, we'd all be hungry & probably soaked & I'd have a lot more photo-editing to do.

My 'Rottweiler-Traffic-Warden' skills gave me the ability to persuade the Thai restaurant staff to give us a '6 for the price of 5' discount!

Thanks Matt.

I really enjoy doing the 'organising', but without your skills, we wouldn't have the great memories of previous UK meets.

Nathan, Paul is refraining from telling you about the fact that several (probably 70+ years old) women were eyeing him up from the bar, on several occasions! He was completely overcome!

D'ya know... It did cross my mind when you'd said you'd booked the HHH that you might be in for a bit of a blue rinse nightmare!

F*cks sake- you could have had the f*cking decency to tell the unfortunate b*stard MF beauforty.

There again, he usually f*cking deserves everything he gets.

Gordon.

Yup... he almost pulled. But even his charm wasn't quite enough to keep the old dear awake at that time of night

Things I learned:

1. You can't buy a disposable barbecue in the Uk in March

2. Lotus's are really cool

3. We all want to borrow Zims 335d coupe

4. Beauforty relies on ESP whilst overtaking

5. Chipped 320d's are very fast, as are 320d's driven by people who understand the racing line

6. Viv's Sat Nav doesn't work right

6- His sat nav works perfectly- he just doesn't give a f*cking toss when it tells him where to f*cking go.

(in DTC mode as well, btw)

Things I learned:

1. The UK E90 fourm fraternity are a great bunch of guys (more girls needed).

2. A DMS remap makes a difference on the 320d. A noticeable push in the stomach, particularly in 3rd and 4th. Thanks for the demo drive, Pads.

3. I don't think I'll get it done though, as there's plenty of fun to be had in standard tune. It just makes keeping up with 330s more of a challenge. Slip roads seemed to be the only problem, but not by much

You didn't seem to have any problem keeping up with me !

Maybe this is why:

No slip roads in the peak district, so it was all about nerve, twisty bits and not hitting tractors.

Seriously, it was great to have such an 'enthusiastic' drive with a group of like minded drivers

You can have a bit of fun on the road on your own, but for me it was expecially enjoyable to have the challenge of keeping up with some great drivers, who clearly enjoy their cars (and have no sense of fear).
