Made a mistake..
Installed HR Sport springs on my 335i two days ago. 800 for install, will cost another 200 for alignment next week when I throw on the summer wheels + 275 including shipping for the springs..
I noticed it is very bouncy, in fact I'm afraid to install my COBB when I get it because If I ever drive spiritedly and catch myself going 160K on the highway and I hit a bump I'm worried my car will fly.. Ride handles better, feels firmer which is fantastic but the bounce does NOT improve over all performance.. I'm happy with the drop over all, they ended up dropping her a little over 2.5" Now, if I'm going to suck up the extra cash and fix this ASAP should I look at getting a Coilover? Or just aft market struts? If I do get a stiffer strut such as Koni's will my ride height go back up, based on the fact that the HR with stiffer shocks was only suppose to drop her about 1.2"? I myself will never adjust the suspension height once they have been installed so I'm not to worried about coilovers. I am also not worried about smoothness / softness I want my car to handle and corner as good as she can and I'm more then happy to endure a back rattling ride. What are your suggestions? If any after market shock will reduce the drop I got from the sport springs back near 1.2 - 1.5" I wont be interested in that route. I'm hoping that once my 19" summers are installed I will have a good .5" of the tire tucked behind the fender or at least match on par. I'm hoping not to spend more then 1000 - 1200 to fix this * not including install * So Shocks for 1K, or coilovers for 1200. Suggestions? Possibilities? Money is already tight as I just spent over 5K on the car this month and I'm saving for my move in the fall with work. UPDATE: ----- Shocks ordered. Dinan stage 1 kit minus the springs as I'm keeping the HR springs on there. Please advise how I should have the dealership adjust the stiffness. I want to go as stiff as possible without being TO stiff for the H&R Sport springs. I want the best handling / cornering out of this set up, I'm completelyhappy to sacrafice ride comfort for better handling. Thanks guys! Last edited by E90Vader; 04-21-2011 at 06:26 PM.. |

First, find a new installer. $800 install and $200 alignment is ridiculous. Second, if you're tight on money, the best solution is finish what you started. Almost everyone says the ride is bouncy if you don't pair the springs with aftermarket shocks. Most people pair the H&R Sport with Koni Yellows. That should keep you under $1000 including install (again, if you switch installers).

$200 alignment is what the dealerships charge here in Arizona.. at least one of them that is. I would expect a regular shop to be quite a bit less than that.

There are not many tuner shops in Calgary I would trust.
I went to Tunerworks, they are simply the best and usually work from ferrari's, lamborghini's and other exotics ETC Even BMW, Merc, Audi whom wish to get extensive wrk done. Will Koni yellows cause my drop to be substantially less seeing is how they are a much stiffer shock? Thats my main concern, I want to keep the 2.5"ish drop I got from the HR sport springs, or will I have to pair the koni's with race springs? Where is the best place to order Koni yellows at the best price? |

The first mistake you made is paying 800 for spring install... 800 for spring install and 200 for alignment is ridiculous. For spring install, you really don't need such a high end shop as you mentioned above... after all, it's just a spring install. Change installer asap.
And shocks will change drop height VERY little or may even have no effect. If you want a sure way of making your drop less, go with coilovers or different springs such as Eibachs and Koni shocks to match. |

You probably measured wrong because you couldn't achieve that much drop with H&R Sport springs.. see below
1.3" / 1.2" --> H&R Sport Springs (part # 50490) 1.35" / 0.8" --> H&R Sport Springs (part # 29187-1) (** Europe-Part# ** this is aparently the same spring as the 50490 but with different lowering listings for some reason.) 1.57" / 1.3" --> Hamann Progressive Springs (part #20 090 120) 1.8" / 0.8" --> H&R Race Springs (part # 29183-1) (** Europe only **) 2.0" / 1.4" --> Eibach Sportline (part # 4.0285)

They are Sport, however the 1.2" is only for 335's which * sport package *
I've read many threads and non sport package 335is end up dropping far more then what was specified. They are Gunmetal black BTW, ordered them from turner motorsports. Again I'm happy with the drop, I want to keep my car at least this low. What shop can I find the best deal on Koni yellows ATM? |

Not sure.... Try shox.com, or some of the vendors on the forum.

$800 for install?!!! Sorry..I had to add to it lol. In Canada too and max here for a very reputable shop is $250...you should definitely shop around or ask around in the local forums for Calgary. I hope you dont go back to them for the shock install.

Koni Yellows should pair well as stated by others. You can also try Bilstein HD but they are not adjustable, and not really made for such a lowered car. Others have done and say its a good solution, so its not out of the realm of possibility.

Solution fixed, though it was an expensive one..
I'm in a funny loop whole right now, I have winter tires and the suspension was never aligned yet... I want to ensure an alignment is done ASAP so I don’t melt the winters ETC. Car goes in to BMW next week for my tranny work * under warranty * as well as throwing on the summer tires and I was going to get th suspension aligned. I phoned around and there would be no way to get Koni yellows in by next Wednesday when the car goes in to dealer.. If I were to phone and book a later appointment, I can't get in until middle of May so that means my tires would of melted! Or I waste another 250 on an alignment when in 2 weeks I'll have to get it done all over again.. I can't go to another tuner shop because I have no way to drop my car off, get to work and pick the car up. No way I'm ordering a taxi as I work 70K from the shop ETC So this leads me to the solution. Called BMW, they are ordering me the Dinan Stage 1 suspension kit * Minus the springs, I'm going to keep my H&R * Kit is basically Koni yellow shocks - Tweaked by dinan for 335i specifically Bumper stops Upper shock mount kit. I felt this was a good way to go as it also includes bumper stops and upper shock mount kit. * Just koni yellows don’t add that * Price is 2600 for kit + installation. 1100 for install, 1500 for kit Now my vehicle will finally handle like it should! I'm very excited, but a little stressed I had to fork up another 2600, after just spending 1K which in turn is now a complete Waste. Thoughts on Dinan Stage 1 - shocks / shock mounts / bumper stops? keep in mind I'll still have a drop of about 2.5" ![]() Shocks go on, alignment will be done, summers go on next Thursday / Friday! It will be so nice when I pick her up!! |

Now that I'm installing the Dinan stage 1 kit, I have a few questions about the shocks.
I know the shocks are adjustable, so I was wondering how stiff I can make them without being to stiff for the H&R Lowering springs. - I know that if they are to stiff for the springs, the same thing happens and the ride will be crap. What I’m looking for is for this set up to handle / corner as good as possible! I don’t mind if the ride is so stiff it rattles my back, I’m young I can deal with it. BMW told me they would keep them at factory settings unless I specify how I want the shocks adjusted. Please let me know how they should be adjusted!! Drop was about 2 – 2.5” I’ll have 19” wheels, 235 front, 265 rear it’s a 2007 Sedan. Thanks guys. |

Again, anybody with insight on how stiff I should adjust the Dinans? - BTW I love my money.. I made the mistake of impulse buying without doing loads of research, even the research I did for every person who advised against getting springs without shocks I said Meh I'll be fine, then when I came across the 1% of posts where someone says you dont need to replace the shocks when you lower your car I said Okay, lets do it and save some money! Next time I will do lots of research, budget accordinly and I will not try to take the cheap and easy way out. Last edited by E90Vader; 04-21-2011 at 06:38 PM.. |

Most people that have hr's with stock struts will say the ride is pretty harsh. There are more than 1% on this forum that would tell you that. The spring rate is not close to stocks. Just get struts you'll be fine.

I thought my quote of $1000 for install and alignment for a set of coilovers was crazy... I didn't get it done, instead I will be installing it myself with a help of a few friends.

I have Dinan Stage 1, paid $1400 for the shocks and springs, upper shock mounts, shipped. Another $700 to install. I thought that was high for install!!
OP, STIFFER DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL BETTER!!!!!!! I would recommend starting with the Dinan recommended specs! I would actually recommend you get the Dinan springs for a few extra bucks as they are tuned to work with the shocks. You can check my sig for my mods, and I used Dinan's stage 3 alignment specs and my car handles incredibly well.
