Johnsons Window Tint vs 3M & Solargaurd
Help,
I had scheduled my car to get the windows tinted today last week and just called to verify my time. I was going to use 3Ms color stable product that is non-metallic after hearing good things about it. Now I find out that they only have it in 50% tint:mad: I'd rather not spend anything if I only got 50% to choose from. They lady even agreed with me, but said that they wouldn't order the darker stuff just for one sell. There only other 3M tint they have is called black chrome but it is metallic. I am a little worried about putting metailic film on the car after reading about some of the troubles on other threads (i have CA). Then she started pushing this Johnsons Window film on me. Said it was $80 cheaper than the 3M, but probably better. Said it was also high performance metallic. What is going on? I have never even heard of Johsons tint before.

I don't know how close you are to NY but You should check out Lorenzo Tint in NY. I got 50% color stable 3M tint, and let me tell you, IT DOES LOOK TINTED. You have to understand that tint itself looks a certain darkness. When put on a car, the glass itselfs has a % already. I was not aware of this until Lorenzo explained this to me. I though 50% was going to be to light, but i didn't want 35% anymore, so i asked what he thinks, he told me 50% would make a difference in my car, i would not be dissapointed. Well when i picked up my car (yesterday) I was in AWWWWWWWW!!!... It was EXACTLY what i dreamed of a tint for my car. He's really knowledged and takes his time to explain what/why he should or will install tints on the car. The material info, and he gave me a car wash before i picked up. I was extremely happy. I will actually make a write up on my experience soon. I just want the temperature to better up to post up pictures on the finish. He told me to come back if i want after a couple of weeks to check up on it to see if anything needs more work, although i'm 100 percent happy with my car. My girl is getting her car done in 2 weeks so i'll go to get a little of the rear dot matrix worked a tad.
Oh and after reading your WHOLE post, Metalic tint is a thing of the past bro, if HE said that it might be better, leave that spot and leave it QUICK. I've never heard of that company. The top qualities out their (Huper optic, 3M, LLumar) and more. Remember 3M has CS(new top quality) and FX(standard). The 3M is cheaper but still 3M tape. Another thing to thing about is make sure he is a AUTHORISED 3M dealer!... UP in jersey i know Top Of the Line tint carry them, but later found out i got the regular 3M and paid VERY close to $300 for it. I got the Color Stable for a little over $300 but it's the better brand, material, and longer lasting... Oh and it's going on my BMW! Good luck, more info feel free to PM me bro, and good luck.

Damm, too late. I just got back and went with the Johnson stuff. They really pushed it and they only had the CS in 50%. If I would have known it was that good, I would have gotten it.
I'm not real happy they way it turned out over my dot matrix areas, especially the back window. I even told the guy about these forums and how difficult the 335 coupe was and he said he had done plenty of them. I said they recommended glue, but he said he didn't like to us it. When he got done he was like, wow, that was the hardest one I've done. Um... yea like I told you so..... Now it looks like crap over my dot matrix. I told them before I left I would give it 2 weeks to see if the water dries, etc. etc., but I would be coming back for them to correct it if it wasn't much better.

Yeah that dot matrix is a bitch, especially for the e92's because near the center the dot matrix is really small, till about 3 inches up, mine is PERFECT, but then as it goes higher, it doesn't look that good, but then near the top is perfect again... It's all good though let the sun hit it and run your fingers thru it. I do it EVERY time i get into the car. So far the side matrixes on the door and rear back is perfect, i can't complain. I'm brining my girls car in 2 weeks so as he said if i want he'll touch up more when i bring it in.
Anyway hope you like the new look. Now that i have tinted, i feel the mod bug started to kick as it did when i had my e46... I'm already thinking rims and PROcede... The PROcede is a DEF... and the rims, i think i will start getting them starting next paycheck.. ONE by ONE!! LOL... Take care dude and any questions feel free to PM me bro.. Like i said, i'll post pics of my ride one the weather get's decent!

You can re-press the film over the matrix once it's dry. I went back to my installer after 3 weeks and he re-pressed it in about 10 minutes, now it's 100% perfect.

Sure, when I get it cleaned up I will post a rear window picture. I was skeptical too, but it looks great now. When he re-pressed it he used a heat gun, so I am not sure pressing it yourself will help much.

Mine actually looked similar to that after the initial install. It was better, but not a lot better. I found some pics after the re-press, give me a sec and I'll post them.

Don't worry bro, it's all good, let it dry up,... Pressing it down does help a lot though,... SPECIALLY on the windows and the rear.. EVERY time i get it i slide my fingers thru the dot matrix on that and the rear glass. The side doors and the little rear window is perfect.. NOW THAT IT HEALED... It's all good when it dries it will look MUCH better. Now as for the rear, mine looked like that when it came out of the tint place... SO no worries, it does get better, believe me. Give it 2-3 weeks later, and let them retouch it. i'll post pics tomorrow morning and after noon. Even though weather sucks ass. tomorrow i'll post pics. Just take it back later (weeks) to get it retouched! in the mean while slide your fingers any change you get on the sides, that helps alot!

Here is no flash, this is what it looks like to the naked eye.
Here is with an off camera flash pointed right at it. You can still see where it was re-pressed, however this is not visible with human eyes (well, at least not mine). Maybe if you have laser eyes. ![]() In any event, I am pleased with it, and I am about as anal as they come. (ps, sorry for the filth, stupid road salt) |

That's FUCKEN HOT!!!... I hear you out on being anal about that stuff. My car tint looks IDENTICAL to the way your looked after the tint. Mine was the same. Can't wait to go get it pressed. Thanks man. I will go get that done in 2 weeks to get it retouched. Awsome!

Sure does look similar. So, it sounds like you guys still recommend I repress it occassionally before I get them to retouch it? If so, how often do you recommend, like once a day or every few days. Thanks for the input as now I know I do have hope !

I didn't touch mine in between the initial install and the re-press. Well, I did a few days later and it didn't do a thing, so then I left it alone.

To tell you the truth repressing it with my fingers helped on the side windows a great deal. Or maybe the tint dried out. Who knows, I used to do it once in the morning before i get in the car to get to work. Twice once i get to work in the parking lot. Then again when i get home after work. so that would be 3 times a day. That's just me though. I will go to get it repressed by the tinter in 2 weeks. After that it should all be good!

Metallic can affect radar detectors and GPS units, so I think it may have an effect on CA. It depends on where the receiver for the CA is placed.
