Billet Turbo upgrade or RB Turbo....

Hey guys, I have been looking at upgrading my stock turbos as my E90 now has, FMIC, Cold air Intake, JB3 ( about to become a JB4), Highflow exhaust with UR DP's, Meth Kit and Charge pipe....My stock turbos I believe are at the end of their life span and I recently decided that I wanna keep my car for another year or 2 so I would like to upgrade from stock turbos but can't decide which way to go....I saw LM RB turbo video and Dyno charts and looked pretty good, but I can't seem to find the RB turbos for sale anywhere??am I missing something? on the other hand I read about the Billet Turbos by AWDMotorsports but have not seen them in action or heard any feed back...give me you 3 cents without turning it into war ... lol

Thanks for the help

Que the WAR!

I tell you what. If I was spending the time and money to upgrade the turbo's I would go with the RB. Just contact him through PM.

Going through all that work I would want the upgraded wastegates and everything else the RB offers.

Nothing against AWD turbos as they are priced less but they dont offer upgraded wastegates.

You can contact Rob Beck over at N54tech. There is a long wait list for these turbos, so if you need something ASAP then go with OEM or billet, plan on waiting a few months for the RB's.

So is Rob Beck really the only reputable person upgrading turbos for the n54 right now?

TurboDynamics out of the UK have a somewhat similar setup to the RB's, although they cost a lot more

yea I'd rather keep it local...
So if I send in my turbos to RB, I better have a spare pair of turbos to smack in my N54 ha! until I get the upgraded ones back...am assuming that from what I have read thus far.

A true upgrade yes. Other companies are "upgrading" the turbos but not to the extent that the RB's are (ie just clipping the wheels). They are seeing gains over stock but they are minimal (440 hp at 18psi), whereas RB customers are producing better numbers.

You can just order them, pay the core charge. After you install you send him your originals and he sends you back your core charge $.

He is just about ready to send out 10 sets that people previously ordered, and he just ordered enough CHRA's (center housing rotating assembly) to make another set of 10. I placed an order yesterday, along with another forum member. Rob said to expect about 7-8 weeks for the final product.

As far as I know, like the poster above, it's the only full upgrade at this time except for maybe Turbo Dynamics stage 2, meaning no clipped turbine wheel.

Full bolt on with JB4 or Procede? Yes for FBO with one of those tunes, 55whp is about right. You are also running in the efficiency range of the upgraded turbos much more than when you wind up the stockers. The limit is fueling right now, with a solution coming soon.

For now a FBO car with the RB turbos can do 450whp on just pump at 16PSI. For comparison, I was doing 380whp on pump with FBO's at 15PSI (So the difference there on 1PSI is 70whp).

475 whp on pump + meth
Max around 500whp on meth + race gas.

Scottp999 speaks the truth on this. We both ordered yesterday and were told 7-8 weeks of wait time. Other than the TD stage 2, this is the only kit I would buy at this point. RB's have had nothing but rave reviews and great results across the board.

I'd also like to add that the max on meth and race gas of 500whp is at 19-20psi. These things are capable of flowing much more than that and the point of dimishing returns is speculated to be somewhere around 25-26psi as compared to the stocker's point of 16.5-17.5psi. 475whp is hit around 17psi and 450 is hit around 15psi iirc. I'd imagine that with proper fueling, one could hit 575+whp at 25-26psi.

Only? Like any platform, the price per hp goes way up once you reach the plateau. FYI, they are $3300 + $150 for parts + 8-12 hours labor install + (optional $200 for oil lines). So they are about $800-1000 more than other so called "upgraded" turbos but cabable of much much more.

I would rephrase that, the fuel limitations only give you 50-55 whp.

They are capable of a lot more, once a upgraded fuel system is available.

You also don't have to pay for the install if you're mechanically inclined and have a hook up with a friend with a lift

Doesn't ASR's kit resemble RB's? it's just priced a whole lot higher?

I really believe in RB's. Is it me or are the N54 cars turning to what Supras did after a few years. Are we gonna see 800-1000hp N54s in the coming years?
