As many posters have noted, my 335i has been making rattling noises when turning the car on and putting foot on accelerator. Took it in to dealer and they called and said they are replacing the wastegates. I don't know what this exactlly means, does it mean the turbos are being replaced? The car is under warranty so no worries, but the advisor did make a comment that the cost of parts alone is around $4,000. Sounds like it's more than just wastegates? What is the difference between wastegates and turbos anyways?
Also, I have complained many times that my car studders and hesitates when accelerating on the highway, usually in 5th or 6th gear. BMW has not been able to replicate. I hope the wastegate replacement resolves this issue ... it seems related? Hopefully I am not putting my self at risk here with what people call turbolag when getting the wastegates replaced? My warranty is up after this service and so I hope everything is resolved. The advisor mentioned that after this service I am out of warranty. Would they still be obligated under warranty if the same problem persists - the hesitation or turbo lag? Last edited by Ravina; 05-02-2011 at 10:03 PM.. |

I'll keep my fingers crossed for new turbos, I took my car in 1 day before the 4 year warranty expiry ... so this is the end of the road for me ... or is it?
If they only replace the wastegates and the problem re-occurs after, can I still take it in under warranty for turbo replacement since it was related to the orignal problem? |

I had a friend who recently replaced his wastegates. Wastegates aren't covered under CPO. He said it was 800 for the parts and well over 1000 for the labor.

Wastegates can't be replaced.
Actuators get replaced. If the wastegates are bad then you will need new turbos.

Yeah the extended warranty is ridiculous priced for an extra 2 years on top of the factory warranty. The no maintenance warranty is pretty expensive to.

Should I be worried that turbos were not replaced? Advisor said turbos rarely go and that my hestitation and rattle will be gone for sure. Could I have have or can I still push to have the turbos replaced? |

Why would the turbos be under warranty for more than 4 years and 50K?
The hesitation you were getting could be a number of things, early build 335i had 2 S.B's concerning the Lag, partially a ECU/DME mapping issues with the throttle. These are NOT included in the Software Updates, but separate SB for the specific problem. |

First off the wastegates are integrated into the turbos, replace one you replace both. The actuator arms arewhat rattles so if that's what your are having replaced per the dealer than that's it, but 3K seems high for that. My concern for yu is the statement the trubos are warrantied for longer, is yur car a CPO or have extended 100K warranty? If not how are they warrantied for longer. I would get that answered when pickingup the car first thing. As far as worreid because they did not replace turbos, not necessarily. It really depends on how you drive, if your modded and how well you tajke car of the car. Get the info on the warranty though.
