Oil Change.... What has your service advisor said?

I just talked to some yahoo over at my local dealership and he said that I can't get my "BMW Ultimate Service" Oil Change until 19,000 miles....

I thought my on board computer and the sales person said 10,000 miles.....

any input????

I received my 335i on Dec 21 2006. 15000 miles or Dec 21 2007 is when I will be getting my oil changed. I have never put 15000 miles on any of my cars in a year. I ride my rode bike alot. So I will be pulling into the service bay on the 21st of Dec 2007 for my oil.

I went to the dealership on Tuesday with 1,100 miles on my 335i. The lady was surprised and told me that I didn't need an oil change for a long time. I told her that I want to do it for a peace of mind since the car is turbo'd. I told her that I would like ///Matt to work on it. She goes to him and said this crazy guy wanted an oil change at only 1,000 miles, he replied "it's better for the car." LOL.

Jesus Christ. Who the hell is going to leave the factory fill oil in there for that long? That's totally insane. At the very least I'm going to dump the oil immediately after the break-in is done. I bought my car, I didn't lease it. I'm planning to keep this one so some extra cash to do intermediate oil changes is nothing. It's a labor of love...

usually bmw follows the guideline of once a year or acording to the OBC..the OBC varies according to how hard you drive you car....i follow what many US members do and change very 5000 miles or 7000 kilometers. its about $95 each time to change oil here in TO..that includes an oil filter, and Mobile 1 full synthetic and someone changing it for me...

The E46 M3 based the oil change on gallons of gas consumed. Supposedly every 666 gallons of gas used would require an oil change. Every second time was an inspection, so:

1.) After 666 gallons of gas used = Oil change
2.) After an additional 666 gallons of gas used = Inspection I
3.) After an additional 666 gallons of gas used = Oil change
3.) After another 666 gallons of gas used = Inspection 2

Of course, the harder you drive, the more quickly you use the alloted gallons of gas, and the sooner your oil change comes up. Some with a lot of highway mileage could go to 20K without the OBD indicating an oil change. The 335i may do the same thing, but not sure what the gallons of gas cut off is.

Personal, I'd just have the oil changed every 3-4.5K miles. No surprise BMWs service lengthened when they offered maintenance free.

I find it strange that the BMW OBC would have such a simple and arbitrary method of determining oil life... Acura now uses a "Maintenance Minder" system that takes into account operating conditions observed by the PCM (coolant temps, average RPM, etc.) to determine the appropriate schedule for the next oil change (and in some vehicles, transmission service).

I suppose fuel consumption could be a good indicator of engine wear, seeing as how engines run richer before they warm up, and obviously burn more fuel at higher rpm and throttle angle... it just seems less precise to me.

If 666 was the magic number......I should have gotten my first free oil change at 15,000 miles.....

Actually it's an excellent indicator and allows each car an oil change when needed. Drive the piss outta it, you get 12mpg, your oil change comes up fast. Grandmother it, and take it easy, your mileage improves and you're babying the motor and related components so no oil change needed.

No overly complex algorithms required, it's pretty ingenious.

Plus it lets BMW know how much you been abusing the car, it rats you out and when you try and say, "But I drive it like my grandmother" they know better.
