Bluetooth Compatible Phones for the 335i coupe
Sorry if this has been discussed but I promise I used the search button and didn't come up with anything useful.
I need to get a Bluetooth compatible phone this month for my 335i coupe. Can you guys please let me know what phones you have that are 100% compatible with the 335 coupe bluetooth feature and that you have never ever had any problems with? Also 1) any general cell phone advice (such as really sexy looking phones or the latest phones out there) 2) good cell phone plans out there would be really helpful. I love purchasing merchandise recommended by those with good taste and every BMW owner IMHO has some DAMN GOOD TASTE! Thanks guys!

LG VX8600 through Verizon. It's a great phone overall and I've had no issues when paired with the car. I had a Motorola KRZR prior to the LG which did have some quirks.

Not sure if the e90 compatible phones are all the same compatability with the e92. Thanks for your feedback!

I'll take this chance to plug my V3xx (Cingular only in the US)... it's *way* faster than any other razr (GSM or CDMA), the battery life's great, and Cingular's practically giving them away.
The Cingular retail versions are only mildly crippled by (esp compared to what Verizon does) and it's nothing that's not defeatable if you're so inclined. |

Is Bluetooth compatability a function of the phone manufacturers having the corret protocol or is it with BMW having the correct protocol? Does BMW need to get with the times? I have a friend who has Nextel in his Toyota Camry and Bluetooth works great, all functions. Thanks.

To be officially pointy-B-bluetooth-logo compatible, you need to support Bluetooth Handsfree Profile 1.0 or 1.5. If you like browsing technical documents in your free time you'll notice that niether one of these says a damn thing about phonebooks... so that's where it gets dicey. There *is* an official pointy-B spec for phonebook access but I'm not aware of any real products actually using it. I'm not intimately familiar with the telematics side of things, but to the best of my knowledge the kit just throws 3GPP AT-commands over the serial command channel of the HFP link and hopes for the best. This usually works fine for your run-of-the-mill featurephones, but smartphones (especially Windows ones) are often designed more like a PDA with a cell-modem taped on the side, and the "pda" side (where the phonebook lives) tends to have dicey support for AT-commands that aren't directly related to phone operation (eg dial, hang up, etc). Every once in a while you run across a glitch in audio handling or call control with an HFP-compliant phone, but by and large the presence of the pointy-B guarantees reasonable audio performance. The only issues you're ever likely to see are in regards to phonebook access or other "secondary" carkit operations. <rant> This is why it bugs the hell out of me the the BMW bluetooth kits don't support voice-dial passthru to the phone; this *is* part of HFP spec, so it's practically guaranteed to work if the carkit would just send the stupid voice-dial command to the phone and turn the mic on! </rant> I suspect that this is so BMW can enforce a uniform user experience regardless of the phone, but my v3xx already has better voice dial than the e92, and the krzr is even better.... Great info Tintivilus! That explains why a number of phones have trouble transfering over their phone books.
It is my understanding that the Bluetooth unit in BMW's is from Motorola and that Motorola cell phones have better compatibility? Any truth to this? I have a Samsung A900 and compatibility appears to be questionable. When my E92 arrives I'll see how it works and switch to a new phone if necessary. Quote:

These aren't made by the same Motorola division that does cell phones; they're done by the ones who've worked on automotive electronics for ages and were recently sold off to Continental. I doubt they officially have any better support for Motorola phones, but anecdotally I'd bet they *test* more with Motorola phones just by virtue of Motorola phones having an usually high concentration among Motorola employees regardless of division. Now that they're a Continental rather than Motorola subsidiary, I'd expect this effect would gradually taper off as employees stop getting the evil eye for carrying a non-Motorola phone. |

I tried an Audiovox PPC 6700 smartphone in a 335 coupe in the showroom and although it was not listed on the "official" BMW website it in fact does work with full hands free capability.

I'm quite sure that call audio will be fine, but the phonebook is anyone's guess right now. I've heard rumblings about BMW having "full iphone integration" or some such thing on the roadmap, but no details about what that might entail, or what's missing now. There's wild speculation that it'll include A2DP music and navigation... but who knows?
