salesman logic - non bmw
I was looking for a family vehicle and asked a local Honda dealer (which I have purchased 3 cars from) for a discount on a 2011 Odyssey MSRP... here is the reply I got...
"As you know the Honda Odyssey is all new for 2011. The MSRP for the 2010 model was $43290. With the MSRP for the 2011 model at $40990 there is a price reduction of $2300 plus tax, which equals $2599 tax included on the 2011 model. That being said, if it is a matter of a few dollars to secure a deal with you, I am sure we could look at any reasonable offer on the silver one in stock. As far as the warranty issue I have attached a page from Honda Canada that will address the issue. Let me know if this seams reasonable to you." |

I did go in, test drove the car, and talked to the sales guy. I sent an email the next day to see where we could start negotiations. Apparently he thinks the car is worth 2600 above MSRP which is my sole point here.

i think it shows more sincere and commitment if you call or even walk in to negotiate

i think it's way better to deal over email and the phone. no crazy pressure sales tactics.
and please send email to different dealerships, use this as a starting point to negotiate with the other places, they will compete against each other to sell. use leverage from things like invoice prices, CCC. But in my experience with BMW, APA was the best because you for sure had a deal at one place, and can use that as leverage. that $65 (i think) membership saved me a lot of money. just make sure your phone is charged, and you are in a comfortable seat. they still pretend to "ask the manager" and put you on hold, but i didn't care since i was watching TV on my couch anyway. good luck

i dont see anything wrong with that reply. I sell cars myself and that guy actually seems like a good salesperson. if you were serious about getting this van, i would act on it sooner than later because prices are going to go up for Japanese car makers due to the earthquake and shortages. demand vs supply. If you are looking to negotiate you can spend $50-60 and find out how much the dealer pays for the vehicle. They will keep a certain % and give you the rest. Sales people need to make money as well, hate it when people don't get that! resonable offers are fine; but i find it hilarious when i get someone who wants $5k off on a Mazda 3! LOL!

I don't see where he wants $2600 more. When new models come out they usually are in high demand and therefore are rarely discounted. Try and get a deal on a 1M. |

It's not that I'm looking for a free car, and I have done my research and know all the price points. I just fail to see what 2010 MSRP has to do with 2011 MSRP and how I should feel like I'm getting a great deal (which I'm not)... that was my whole point.
