Turbo Issues!!!!

I dropped my car off for yearly maintenance and told the dealer about a throaty ticking sound coming from the middle of my exhaust. I have had problems with my waste gate before so I figured it was getting stuck open. Turns out they had to replace both of my turbo’s. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I’m guessing it’s a positive thing that I have 2 brand new turbs but the car only has 50,000 on it and I was surprised it had this issue.

Unfortunately it is very common. The wastegates are known for dying quickly and BMW is choosing the path of replacing the whole turbo. My car has just gone over 56k and I wish I could drop it off to get new ones myself.

Yeah my car has 55k miles and the person I purchased it from a couple weeks ago told me both turbos have been replaced also.

My car isnt under factory warranty now though, hopefully if I have any further issues with the wastegates my AFTERMARKET warranty covers this, I think it should as it says it specifically covers turbo chargers and their system parts.

OP, so was your 335i driving like it had a boost leak or anything? Besides the rattling you hear under the car was there any other signs of them failing?

Thanks, Travis

For an '07 that's ok...you probably had the smaller turbo actuator rods but they decided to change out your turbos...maybe yours had some in-out shaft play as well

I had this done when the dealer found my waste gates were rattling. They did tell me they were replacing them though.

Can anyone tell me when did they switch over to the bigger turbo actuators? I have a 2008 model but it was built in Oct 2007. Currently, I have 21K miles on the car and I've never heard my wastegates rattle.

+1 im not sure of when they did this.

I would like to know if I have the newer ones installed on my car, its a 2007, but I can look at the serivce info and see when the turbos were replaced to gauge if I have the newer design.

I didnt think i was having a loss in power but now its alot different. i have alot more boost on the top end and alot more torque. i dont know if this is because the old turbos were leaking or if the new ones are just that much better.

I hear this sound when I go from a dead stop into low acceleration, kinda like a rattle and it seems to be more towards the right side or middle of the car. It's very clear now that my windows are usually down because of the season. I'm driving a 2011.

My car has been doing this since the day I got it, It rattles when I cold start, 1-2 shift, and off the line. Very quite rattle, but its there. I was told it is the exhaust flap, and the ONLY time to be scared of the rattle is when ur decel.

If you have a rattle in decel its the WGA's, I just wanted OP's info on any other driveability issues when they WGA were not working properly.

Why don't you take it to the dealership?

I originally thought it was just the flap keeping the exhaust closed before 3k+ rpm but I just now started putting 2 and 2 together. I figured they would have solved this from the n54 to the n55 but now I suppose not.

-update took the car for a drive after being cold for 5 hours...didn't hear anything

Now that i have these new turbo's i want to put in a BOV and an intake. Will this increase my chances of issues with the new turbo's? im so nervous to do anything to my car because i dont want to hurt my warranty.

Also i have heard that you loose noticable power with an aftermarket BOV is this true???
