Castrol Edge Sport is NOT TO BE USED IN AUSTRALIA.

It is BMW LL-04 approved which is for countries with LOW-SULFUR FUELS. Our country has high-sulfur content so requires BMW LL-01.

Mobil 1 Supersyn (gold bottle) 0W-40 is LL-01 approved and suits our cars. It is the oil I use exclusively in mine. Any BMW LL-01 approved fuel can also be used for top up, but this is the best option.

Pics for reference: Read the black bit that states what the oil is approved for.

Interesting pic.. LL04 and Castrol is what BMW Dealerships use.

And LL04 oil is recommended in BMW Owners Manual... no conditions... no qualifiers.

You got a detailed info link that explains and validates that image?

That was taken at local Autobarn when one of the Aussies at 1Addicts went searching for oil. I can confirm it does in fact say that on the back of the bottle when I looked.

Aussie dealerships use LL-01 for SURE in petrol engines. The back of the 1L containers they sell at accessories says this. LL-04 might be okay for diesel, but for petrol in Australia, it's definitely LL-01.

There's a whole thread back on 1Addicts that discusses this very point. Some investigative individuals were able to discover that LL-04 was used in Europe for low sulfur, while LL-01 is for US and Australia where we have higher sulfur content.

Doesn't say anything about being LL-01 approved, which is what is required for petrol engines in Australia. Trust me, the dealer uses LL-01.

Shell "helix ultra extra 5W40" has the BMW LL-01 rating. Normally its a bit cheaper than Mobil.

The approval thing is not entirely true and mostly comes down to endorsments and millions of $ changing hands for the "LL title" - so our market is a little behind. LL04 is a newer standard than LL01 and our fuel is some of the best compared to the US. Our sulphur standards were improved from 500ppm a few years ago to 50ppm back in 2008.

Castrol Edge is fine. Many dealers use it and also shell helix and Mobil 1.

0w40 is better suited to the N54 engines, for other E90's 5w30 is the recommended oil

I don't think the 5W30 shell helix has LL-01 approval. Only the 5W40 has it. You should check the bottle when you buy it to make sure.

This is the 5W40

This is a good point. It used to be that you had to buy highest octane rated petrol to get low sulphur content, but maybe thats not true anymore. I don't know what the recommended sulphur content is for use of LL04 oil. It probably depends how far you drive between oil changes.

This is true. However, our sulfur content is still high compared to the EU nations who have an upper limit of 10ppm for petrol and diesel.

Hence, LL-04 is okay to use for diesels since our limit for diesels is also 10ppm since 2009.

When the LL-04 designation was made in 2004, EU limit was 50ppm and Australia was 500ppm. So I guess what you say makes sense, but I'm gonna stick with LL-01 for now.

Absolutely agree 100%

LL04 is fine for petrol BMWs running PULP at 50ppm and is a must for diesels with DPF.

A bit of light reading regarding fuel standards..

You could use castrol edge sport 5w-30 or 0w-40 if you wanted to - but if you stick with the Castrol SLX LL-01, it should be cheap and is approved, so no worries.

Shell Helix Ultra 0w-40, 5w-30 and 5w-40 look to be LL-01 approved...figure that one out

Given the theme of this thread.. I thought I'd ask in here:

Does/Has anyone simply had an oil service at the dealership? If yes, how much and which one?

What about an Indy... same deal, price and location please.

Cars telling me first service is due at 22k.... got 12k on clock now and figure its time for an oil change as the build date is June 2010 - so 12mths is long enough for me.

Yes I have, it was real expensive. It was about $330 IIRC including oil and labour.

Much cheaper at indy workshop. I get it done for less than $200 including oil. You're in QLD so unless you're willing to make the drive down, don't have any recommendations
