Any E85 progress?

I have searched and the prob is, the search doesn't recognize 3 letter words!!! ARGHH!!!

I have e85 less than 1.5 miles from my house.

I have DCI, JB4, catless 3in DPs and soon to delete secondary cats.

My buddy wants to line up some of his cars to see what mine will do.
It'd be fun to run every once in a while in a small mix.

I've run numerous tanks of 93/E85 50/50 with no issues whatsoever. My logs have looked good and the car has pulled pretty good with it. My only issue is that it burns 3X faster and I drive quite a bit.

Give it a shot and log.

The thing about making big power with E85 is that you would need more fuel flow than stock. Because although E85 has a higher octane level than gasoline, it has a lower energy content. That is why most of the STi's, Evo's, and other FI cars run upgraded fuel pumps and injectors when converting to E85. The thing with the N54 is we dont have aftermarket injector's so we are limited in running E85, not to mention if our fuel system as a whole can handle it.

You can more than likely run up to a 50/50 mix with good results, but I wouldn't run it often. If I were you and wanted to run more boost against friends, I'd get race gas and call it a day.

I always run 4 gal of E85 to a tank of Shell 91 and it runs great with more power. The Jb4 has been auto tuning to between 14.5-15.5 psi on it with your same mods.

ok, this post comes from somebody not too familiar with N54 tuning options, but very familiar with EJ257 tuning (STI). For one, E-85 is corrosive to rubber, but you probably know that. Second, what's the point of dropping in E-85 and raising your octane level, but not adjust timing? What real advantage are you getting? Sounds like the risk isn't worth the reward. The benefit to e-85 is running more advance timing, and tons of it! it takes a retard to let it pre-detonate. From what I read, you guys run off the shelf maps for the most part. So what's the point of running E-85 if you can't adjust your map? Sorry...just reading about these cars cause I'm interested in getting a 335.

the jb4 runs stock ignition timing which is quite aggressive. this does not allow you to run that much boost otherwise you get timing drops.
with the e85 you can run 1-2 psi more probably with great results without any drops as you can do with meth injection.

I'd have to see the timing map to see what's aggressive. Timing makes power, boost doesn't. So you increase boost but it pulls a few degrees of timing...could just cancel it's self out. Sounds like the risk is greater than the reward. So basically everybody relys with off the shelf maps from tuners, and runs E-85 and meth? Tell me that's not right!

I also wanted to throw it out there...since I didn't see it any where else, and the OP is obviously seeking info about E-85. E-85 doesn't read stoich AFR's. So to those who are logging their cars, what exactly are you looking for? My guess is your logs look at something like this. Boost, AFR, IAT, ignition timing, WGDC, Fuel tables, knock correction, right? So what exactly are you looking at? I'm just worried that you guys are doing damage to these beautiful, and expensive cars. Having experience in the import world, E-85 has been used in these cars for a while now, so we have quite a bit of useful information. Just don't want to read a thread about somebody popping their motor...my guess is it's quite expensive! Just food for thought for the OP.

I miss my E85 powered Evo9. The minute somebody figures out the fuel system to run E85 on the n54, I would not hesitate to run it again even if I get shitty gas mileage (11-15mpg depending how much fun I have).

My buddy just got 98 miles from a full tank of e85 on his Evo X MR Touring. With a 13.7gal tank that is 7.15mpg on 385. This *is* pushing 450hp though.

Either your buddy can't control his right foot, or there is something wrong with the car. The car with an upgraded turbo should see slightly better gas mileage if he's able to drive it normally with the increased lag. Have him get the car checked out if it's not his driving habits.

I personally would not try to make that kind of torque on those SST transmissions though. Props to him though.

I would love to try the 93octane e85 mix at the track, but the idea makes me a little nervous.

The general concensous seems to be that blends of up to 50/50 E85/gas are ok to use once and a while, but straight E85 will cause damage: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11542

Another is that if ur hpfp craps out while running mixed 91/e85 or better than you MAY not get it covered since part if bmw's protocol is to test ethanol level in the fuel when it goes bad and if it has over a certain amount u may not get covered
