2012 N55 JB3 and DP Dyno Pulls

Today I went down to Specialty Z in Chatsworth, CA to get some dyno pulls on their DynoJet. My car is a 2012 n55 135i dct with a 4" catless downpipe and jb3. Also, this car is a March build date and has new map sensors, so this should be the first dyno post with this version. Terry@Burger Tuning decided to join me so I gave him my car and let him do his thing. The temperature was around 80 degrees outside and I was running 91 octane from Mobil, which we later figured out to be hindering my performance. More on that later.

So we strapped my car down and got her ready. The first few runs were scrapped because we were experimenting with some things. After everything got set, we decided to do one pull at different settings, starting with 0 psi (stock map) and increasing +1 psi, to +2 psi, 3.5 psi, and finishing with 4.5 psi which is where my max power came out. Here are the following numbers with each setting:

Map 0 (+0 psi, downpipe, 91 octane): 274.72 whp and 299.36 wtq
Map 1 (+1 psi, downpipe, 91 octane): 286.91 whp and 316.55 wtq
Map 1 (+2 psi, downpipe, 91 octane): 299.71 whp and 327.18 wtq

From here we noticed that adding more PSI wasn't yielding much more HP but the TQ was consistently rising. We couldn't figure it out, so we added some octane booster and that seemed to do the trick. Mobil 91 gas is crap, and it really limited my power. From here on out I will likely get shell. Anyway, back to the numbers.

Map 1 (+3.5 psi, downpipe, 91 octane+octane booster): 322.01 whp and 350 wtq
Map 1 (+4.5 psi, downpipe, 91 octane+octane booster): 326.19 and 379.14 wtq.

All of these runs were at the end of about 20 experimental runs, so I'm sure heat was becoming a factor. The octane booster only seemed to help the HP as the TQ was always there in earlier runs we did without the octane booster.

Hopefully this info is helpful for all you guys as it seems to be the only 2012 new mapped n55 dyno. I'd like to thank Terry Burger for all the help. He's seriously provided some of the best service I could imagine and more. Thumbs up to him and I recommend for any products you guys may want.

And finally, here are the pictures to prove it.

You know there a stickies for Dyno? Any ways nice number on a JB3. You should go with JB4 for more features.

This was 5th gear which I believe is standard for DCT dynoing.

And for the baseline with a DP, the tune was completely off.

When you said Terry did his thing
does that mean he was doing the dyno runs?
or just overseeing -

I'm sure with
madmanhiker recent dyno
he doesn't feel to bad you did
better numbers on the dyno.

What tips can you give to him
or others that are gonna dyno soon?

Terry was doing the dyno himself. He would dyno about 3-4 runs and then review logs, change boost around, and do whatever else he needed.

It sure is! This has more potential in it too because we got our good numbers at the end of our many runs. So hopefully with shell gas, and re-dynoing I can hit 335whp

Awesome numbers... I need to get my X dyno'd... I don't think I'll see gains as impressive as you, but I would love to see what the JB3 is doing on mine, hopefully this can help getting Mad's problem resolved, but it'll have to wait till he comes back from 'the bush'

Wow. I had no idea the octane could make such a big difference. Any comments on other"top-tier" gas quality? I think I saw Mike post on N54tech that he favors Shell, at least as far as consistency is concerned. How's Chevron, in your opinion? Better than Mobil?

Reason why you aren't seeing a rise in hp up top is because they all taper to the same boost in the higher rpms

Not sure about Chevron, I've just always heard that Shell is the best. Terry was saying that with better fuel I SHOULD have hit 335whp. Maybe that was possible if we would have waited a few hours for the car to cool down too.

Not necessarily. If you throw 91 ARCO in your car, you might as well piss in your gas tank. Atleast around CA it seems that every gas station has different quality.

Hm I never thought about that. Still seems weird because Terry's N55 dynoed his higher numbers like 335whp-340whp on the same dyno I was on, with the same mods, however he ran shell gas instead. Must just be that then.

I'm not sure on the different types of 93 since I only get 91, but I can imagine that your worst 93 is leagues beyond my best 91!

Fuel quality does play a large role. Especially if the conditions are not ideal like hotter weather. I know BMS did their testing during the winter so I bet that boosted hp up a bit. I know the +4psi on 91 and +5psi on 93 settings have been working well but I suspect when the hot summer months kick in +3psi and +4psi will wind up making more power on pump gas.

+1. Turbos are pretty maxed out top end thus, you wont see more power up top unless you're able to increase ignition timing via higher octane or lower IATs.

You saw more tq as u "increased" boost low end because boost was increased, but the taper up top remained the same.

Ah ok, can anyone explain to me why this turbo is maxed out already? May sound like a noob question, but I know my k03 turbo on my old a4 was able to boost at 21psi and that was a smaller turbo.

And I'll be running meth very soon! Time to lower those IATs
