What the heck is transport+prep of $2000.00?

I was just talking to a dealer regarding a 335i... and "quoted":

A base price $49900.00, with automatic transmission $1600.00, leather interior $2400.00, and transport+prep $2000.00. Total of $55900.00 plus tax and fees.

What the heck is transport+prep for $2000?

BMW.ca quotes at $55,600 for the same configuration.

Should I still expect 2-3% off the total price for negotiation?

I think the $2000 is for PDI? If so, I think the norm is $1895.

You guys have to PAY for your PDI? that sucks.

And yes, it's unavoidable (whether you're paying for it or not, it has to be done)

I actually wrote to BMW canada many times about this, on the US website when you configure a car they specify the F&PDI fee but it is left out on the Canadian website (1895$). When you configure a lease this will add a good 50$ per months over 36mths. What is the purpose of configuring a car if the final amount is that far off??? this is a shady way of doing busuness.

I think it is because the price varies by dealer. But I agree with your point.

Yeah... the BMW PDI sucks. Somehow it costs less than half the price to bring an Audi over from Germany. Go figure...

It is very shady indeed, if all dealerships perform the same steps in the prep and PDI (which I hope there's some sort of standard operating procedures and/or quality assurance in place), then why do one dealership charge more than another? They should standardize the delivery and PDI charge. If you paid 2,000, tell them you expect your car to be air-shipped to you and the car detailed thrice over.

i always thought PDI also included the cost of transporting the vehicle from the factory to the dealership. presumably, PDI should vary by region...depending how far from the ports each dealership is.

just my guess.

I believe the four Vancouver area dealers have banded together to charge the same amount of $1995 for PDI.

This is one of the only retail industries that PDI is charged at the discretion of the retailer. When was the last time you were charged a separate fee for buying a tv or a dishwasher?

yeah no kidding.

at the checkout "whoops... these jeans were actually made in india so we're going to need to charge you $50 for transportation"

I'd like to know what the actual manufacturing cost of an E90 is.

I was told by my guy at Parkview that all of the BMW dealers in the GTA charge the same amount for freight + PDI. Mind you he also said that all of the GTA dealers meet monthly with BMW Canada to review sales and discuss discounting with the intention of minimizing discounts for all BMWs sold in the area.

Sounds a bit like collusion/price fixing if you ask me.

that would be plausible when we're comparing dealerships from different regions of Canada, however, I was speaking of the dealership in the Greater Toronto Area, I got 3 different amounts from 3 different dealerships. and that's the crime I was talking about.

however, knowing the manufacturing cost doesn't really do us any good though, because we as consumers may feel bitter after finding out the actual manufacturing cost, and not taking into consideration the R&D cost. A biger cost of making cars is the R&D that goes into it, car companies can't recoup that cost by one big scoop.

I have seen different quotes from different GTA dealers recently and here are the typical numbers

Freight: $600.00
Admin Fee: $299.00 - $499.00
PDI: $1,295.00

having said that there seems to some "wiggle room" for all of the 3 items mentioned above. in other words: those numbers are NOT fixed or dictated. the dealer CAN reduce any or all of the above to win your business ... and I am speaking from experience !!

The $1995 value I mentioned is PDI and freight so this isn't too different than the $1895 ($1295+$600) in the GTA.

I have found that some Vancouver dealers have different types of fees on top. Some have 'admin' and 'documentation' fees.

Kind of funny because the sales guy call me a week after delivery telling me they forgot to charge us the PDI and wanted us to pay for it. $1895 plus tax.
