Scumbag dealer strikes again!
A little backstory:
Took my car in for some issues and end of warranty work. I was happy to get a new transmission, injectors, etc. While the transmission was off, they offered to replace my clutch at "cost" because "I only had 20% clutch material left." $400 for a new clutch installed? I'd be a fool not to. Except when I popped in one day and saw the car, the clutch had plenty of material. I've installed a few clutches myself, I know what 20% material vs. 80% material looks like. I get there to pick up my car, and examine my car as soon as I get it as I usually do. A rather large scratch on my passenger door is there. Maybe as long as my middle finger. I complain, they polish it out, okay that I can deal with. Now the last time I took my car in, my car had significantly less gas than when I brought it in. I could't prove anything, so I decided to run a little test this time. I cleared the odo, and the MPG avg values, and took pictures of both right before I gave them the keys. When I sat in the driver seat after I picked it up, the Trip conveniently only has 9km on it. My Odo? 160km extra. Now, I thought thats excessive. My clutch felt pretty soft too. So I went ahead and checked the MPG avg. How much? 14mpg. 14! Anybody with a 335 know what it takes to achieve 14mpg? I never avg less than 26mpg, and I drive pretty quick. This guy was beating on my car, with a brand new transmission, and a clutch that I JUST paid for. I confronted the SA, conveniently also has no idea what happened. My point? I don't have one. Just ranting. Any similar experiences? |

Ouch that's rough! Hope they take care of it well. Did you take it to the management of the dealership? BTW, do you drive almost all highway? I don't get more than about 19 mpg from my in town driving.

I never thougth a BMW dealership would do this type of stuff... I would be raising hell if I noticed this, like you dont even know... it is funny you bring this up, just this weekend my uncle was telling me what he does for his z06, every time he takes it to the dealership or gets any work done, he makes sure he has as little gas as possible, as far into the red as he can, that way if they wanna use it for more than in and out of the garage, it will first need gas... it be real dumb to go fill up and risk being caught by the security cameras at most gas stations... which brings me to my next point, you should ask the BMW dealership if they have cameras isntalled, if they do it be real easy to prove who left with your car...

Yea mostly highway. I floor it once or twice while driving, maybe on ramps and once in the city, but even still I can only imagine how hard it is to get the mpg that low.

I do mostly city driving and drive relatively hard.
My Average MPG has never dropped below 18. I hope you get some solace from contacting BMWNA. At the very very least they should refund the money for the clutch, otherwise, i'd lawyer up just out of principle.

I'm going to give them until tomorrow to explain themselves since many people had left by the time I got my car back. After work, I'll contact BMW Canada. Whats the best route? Phone? Email? It's kind of a long story, I don't want the person on the other end of the phone to get bored and not pay attention.

After some thinking, it IS possible that they reset the mpg right before doing a pull, and then went straight back into the dealer. They did reset the trip after all. They can easily claim that they needed to do that to ensure the gearbox/clutch was installed properly.
That however, still doesn't explain the mileage. I asked the SA, he said they took it around the block (8km as I mapped out their stated route in google maps). So something fishy is still going on. edit:spelling |

When I drove an STI, and was concerned about joy riding, I would always take a cell phone picture of the odometer before dropping it off. Since they are time stamped its good proof of mileage differences.

I'll say that I have someone *very* close to me who heads up a major BMW dealer's body shop. The stories that he has told me makes yours seem laughable. They get BMW's in with significant body damage and have caught tech's playing bumper cars with them. The excuse was that nobody can tell, there's so much damage that they just re-damaged the damaged parts. I was also told of a technically totaled (but repairable) M5 being drove into a brick wall at 70mph just to see how it felt... After that it wasn't repairable at all. I have known this person for 27 years...I trust them more than I trust just about anyone else.
I wouldn't ever be surprised. |

I get a lot of fuel useage at the dealer as well...
But it is typically related to test programs surrounding the HPFP and Injectors. Whenever I take my car in for something like this it always comes back with ridiculously low consumption rates but not too many more miles.
