Colour of side marker light?

I have a Space Grey 335i, and want to replace the stock side marker lights with the smoked ones. Must I use the ones with the amber light inside, or can I go with the white lights and smoked lenses? Does anyone know what the law says about the colour of the side marker lights?

mine are smoked. as long as it flashes orange i "think" you are OK. I used that e-tech tinting spray. very easy to do. dont give it too many coats though.

Mine are smoked with white LED's, no idea if they are legal or not.

Guess I'll find out if they're not

Today I was looking at cars in the car park, and I saw some looked white, some amber. I did find this in the MOT tester's handbook:

**********************
A. Flashing Type

1. Check the presence, security and operation of the selector switch.

2. Operate the left and right direction indicators in turn and check:

a. the driver’s ‘tell tale’ warning device for presence and operation

b. that the minimum number of direction indicators are securely fitted

Note: The precise position of direction indicators is not part of the inspection, but check visually that the lamps are at about the same height and the same distance from each side of the vehicle.

c. they are in good working order

Note: At least 50% of light sources in a lamp must illuminate and at least 50% of a lamp must be visible from the front, rear or side as appropriate

d. that every direction indicator emits amber light (except vehicles first used before 1 September 1965)

e. the flashing rate

f. they are not adversely affected by the operation of any other lamp.

Note: It may be necessary to run the engine when checking the flashing rate

************************

problem is, I don't know if a side marker light constitutes a "direction indicator" or if that term is reserved only for the corner signals.

You can install smoked side marker lights if you wish as long as the bulb (lamp) flashes orange , same goes for the front indicators.

Yeah, that's what i'm thinking... every car I saw today had amber side markers, even the ones with white lenses. Bloody hell, I really wanted the white LED's.
