N55 | Power Mods DYNO NUMBERS
Why is it so easy... to get extra power on an N54, and
the N55 is another story? It's because the N55 is new. The N54 is proven and continuing, rightfully so. Enough said for the N54. With the N55, the biggest single "best that money per HP can buy" is a tune. And there are many tuners to choose from already on this infant N55 motor. And I choose the Procede. I did dyno and was surprised. 2011 E90 N55 91oct Vanguard exhasut Berk DP Injen Intake Proced 3.21 w/ fuel sensor MAP 1 Dyno'd at EAS because last power mod Berk dyno'd my E90 there for their DP. I figured got a base dyno there, the numbers for comparison will be solid. Should be solid. here it is: procede MAP 1 RUNS shock'd at the numbers with MAP 1 after 3 pulls I switch'd to MAP 2 and plug'd the USB into the laptop to datalog the next runs. procede MAP 2 RUNS I started to scratch my head. the numbers are off comparing to shiv's dynos'. It looks close to were it should be though. But with the bolt on's I have, the hp should be higher... The power starts to drop off after 5K too. I'm get'n between 60whp/80ft.lbs on the curve before that though - not to bad. COMPARE runs with baserun datalog run 1 datalog run 4 Not content with the numbers and wanted to redyno with the stock intake instead of the injen intake... I scheduled more runs at MD Automotive. I like to mention the "DME SW update" that BMW is doing for production bimmers PRE FEB 2011 builds. This update does yield lower numbers. At the time I was trip'n out on it when i redyno'd at MD back in late February. I thought it was the intake but it wasn't it was the update. I do have baseruns post-DME SW update as you'll see. I reinstalled the stock intake and set the procede to MAP 2. The bimmer ran like this for more than a week. I put her on the dyno at MD and here are the runs. MD dyno baseruns procede MAP 2 - oem intake RUNS scratching my head and looking at the curve and comparing the baseruns, I made a phone call to Robert at Vishnu. We soon changed the Map 2 parameters with higher boost settings reset everything and with a 40min cool down did 2 more runs. At this point I'm think'n autotuning hasn't fully kicked in - oh well, I wanted to see what numbers it would do, so i did 2 pulls. here are the numbers. procede MAP 2 (new parameter) RUNS MD BASERUNS procede MAP 2 Compare RUNS The torque numbers did go up - the curve looks a bit rough. I didn't mimic the numbers that shiv posted but to be fair the updated MAP 2 did feel stronger on the road home. Feeling a bit defeated and throwing in the towel for the day. I'm accepting the N55 woes. Pulling hp like the N54 is alot different than the N55. The N55 is a torque whore but it's definitely not a dyno queen. And for those of you that want to see the comparison with stock intake and injen intake posted below. EAS - MD compare RUNS injen vs oem intake I know they're different dyno's but you can look at the curve. It is similar, until u get to the higher RPMs. The injen intake does drop a bit past 6k. It doesn't lose dramatic power with the procede - from what i've seen from the dynos. I'm happy bout that. I'm slap'n the INJEN intake back on. I have a Vishnu charge pipe and CX FMIC that will be going on soon. It's been sitting collecting dust while I've been going to all these dyno sessions. At this point, it is what it is with the N55. I still say biggest gains are Tune and DP for the N55. To wrap up - I give alot of credit to Vishnu for bringing out this tune. The N55 has had it's ups and down and for anyone looking for serious HP for their N55 - I can't say anything bad bout this tune. The CAN features, dataloging, support, the updates coming from vishnu is phenomenal. What makes this different with any other tune? Some say performance, some say price, some say installation, some say support. Whatever tune it is, it's your choice because with any tune "you pay to play". At the end of the day you're held responsible for ur power mods. Choose one that best fits your needs. The procede fits mine. But in all respects, I enjoy this tune and it's functions very much and continue waiting for new updates for it. Slowly but surely, reaching the N55s limits. thanks for reading - hope this helps. Thank you EAS for the dyno's - Berk, Mark at MD, Vishnu, Injen, LTBMW.

Thanks for the detailed update. From what it sounds like, I really hope there will be more development on N55 as N54 didn't take long before it made huge power numbers.

Something is not right. Your base numbers look good but the rest don't. Most people aren't dyno'ing their n55's correctly. Shiv mentioned that the n55 is tricky when it comes to the dyno. He said he was going to produce a tutorial on how to properly dyno an n55, not sure if he ever did however.
Another thing to consider, for me, with either 3-20 or 3-21 maps (with fuel harness), after 100 miles of driving the car turns into a pig. When I clear codes (no SES light turned on), the car suddenly turns into a monster. If I keep driving past 100 miles, while low cruising or idle, I'll eventually either get an SES light or half engine/limp. I do not have the latest dme update. |

Thanks for posting this... Not really what we N55 guys want to see/hear, but it's good data none the less.

i have logs for the dyno runs i did at MD. pretty much show'd the operator the video that shiv made and copied it. I had conversations with Vishnu before the runs. discussed about other members dyno runs as well. add'd my stock intake back on. reset'd everything a week prior and had it on map 2. -conditions were pretty close. huge fan in the front - went to 2 dyno facility. -if anything those baseruns would provide some incite to the power between the curves. like i said the N55 is not a dyno queen.

Those look exactly like my numbers with the procede and DP Frankie.
Is it safe to say we should be switch gears at 6500k instead of 7000k since we are looking power ... ![]() |

doesn't seem that bad for 91oct running 14.5-5 psi. 85*
wouldn't numbers be slightly lower due to the fact that your running a 335i? i'm not sure if theres more of a power loss due to different variables in models. correct me if im wrong here.

the gains between the curve looks pretty good. seems like with all the n55 dyno - i've notice a drop pass 5K. Quote:
humidity will factor in, wheel size, many things. various models should yield same numbers. maybe the DCT yields higher? because you dyno it on a different gear? All i know other guys that have dyno'd similar setup - we're all very similar in gains. which is a good thing. also to mention BMW threw in an error code 13001 "Poor Road Surface" - front wheels aren't spinning along with the rears. so the bimmer trips out when you dyno. i was hoping i would be able to get those numbers. ![]() N55 another day figuring it out. I'm solid with the performance thus far with the piggyback. It's just waiting patiently to add more to the equation. This summer for the N55 should be interesting though. That FMIC and meth i can't wait. i'm still very optimistic with the N55. these dyno's to scare me off at all. i may try race gas and put her back on the dyno.

After viewing those dyno results, I don't know how you can be optimistic for the N55. To me, the N55 is a lost cause.

yeah the only thing i can think that going to push the n55 past 350-370whp is meth or a turbo upgrade, other than that i don't see n55 breaking 11's or the 380whp mark anytime soon.
This small turbo is holding it back!! |

Your car is overboosting and going into a valet mode. The only thing I can think of is that shiv hasn't updated the procede to the new dme software updates(hence his numbers are for previous dmes). This might also explain the MAF error codes people are getting at the start up. Since the MAF is used differently now i would assume that Shiv would have to rewrite some of the coding. But I'm no tuner, these are just my speculations...

we can speculate all we want until
shiv chimes in and a new update comes. i guess that's why it's beta maps. Ernie do you send datalogs to shiv constantly?
