It's no more BMW NA sixes. But that has been a topic of discussion on this board for quite some time in the various threads. No surprise there.

Is the 335i going to disappear?

The 323i and the 325i (and US 328i) NA sixes, yes but I do not think that BMW will only have 4 cylinder then 8 cylinder engines across their range. The straight sixer(s) will be available, just turbo charged.

Maybe even a range of turbo straight sixers.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the diesel sales when the T4's come out. Personally I rather liked the choice between 323i and 320d and could quite understand somebody chosing refinement, throttle response and character over torque and fuel economy. T4 petrol will come close to having the best of both worlds perhaps.

According to Wheels mag, their first drive of the X1 xDrive28i (with the N20 2.0L turbo) the donk sounded like a 'pedigree Honda 4cyl'.

That would be a fair assumption. The NA sixes are all old engines. The turbo six (N55 is the new one) is only a year or so old and variants of it are used in the X5, X6, 335, 535 etc. They wont get the performance of a turbo 6 from a turbo 4 in a large car. The reason that the N54 was replaced with N55 was pretty much due to fuel economy. The twin turbo N54 was a beast but uses a lot of fuel, whereas the N55 is only a single turbo (but twin scroll - mechanically different but similar result).

For those who follow F1, they are shifting to turbo sixes from 2014 - thankfully the turbo four idea has been abandoned in the short term and hopefully for ever (it was Audi who wanted that brought in and then they changed their mind anyway). I think BMW will return to F1 as an engine supplier in a few years if the turbo six formula gets the nod for a longer term. Good for the brand without the hassles and cost of designing a fast car.

Turbos are back for good, and hopefully lag free! Now all we need is to get rid of electric cars, or stick some speakers where the exhaust is and play an engine soundtrack. Anyone ever heard a Tesla driving at speed? No, didn't think so.
