323i Transmission Pan Gasket Repair Help

I got someone that needs some help with a N52 engine transmission pan gasket. The car is a 2006 323i AT. The report from BMW is below.

BMW has said the gasket needs to be replaced and the owner wants to mitigate cost. From what she said, BMW will charge about $100 for the gasket and then another $400 for install.

If anyone has any help/advice to offer that would be much appreciated. Even a Part Number for the gasket will help. A DIY would be great if anyone has one.

BTW: she took her car to BMW Gallery in Calgary which the WORST BMW DEALERSHIP I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. I live 2km away so I took my 335 there for a HPFP fix and it was an absolute goat rodeo. The people that work there are less then slow and they have no idea how to operate or communicate like the rest of the world does. You can see on the service order that they charged her $69.50 to inspect the car on the hoist but they already had it up there for an oil change, that's the type of RIP OFF TACTICS THAT BMW GALLERY uses on a daily basis. Frankly, I am sometimes embarrassed to own a BMW when people tell me about their experiences with BMW Gallery in Calgary.

Go to Calgary BMW instead. They are both owned my the same people but for some reason Calgary BMW actually has their act together.

$400 for the install seems a little much to me for just replacing the gasket. The tranny pan has 24 screws that hold it in place and it comes right off (after you drain the fluid of course). Then you replace the gasket, bolt it back into place and then refill with fluid.

A local indy shop should be able to do that much cheaper. The gasket itself is about 25-30$ US. Then you'll probably need to buy more fluid to replace what was lost.

You could get a complete flush kit (with new Pan, Filter, Gaskets, etc. and 6 liters of LG6 fluid) for $240US from www.thectsc.com and get an indy to replace everything for less than or equal to the dealers cost.

I would also recommend, if you are going to the trouble of taking the pan down from the transmission, to replace the mechatronics sealing sleeve, it has a tendency to leak on ZF equipped E90's. It's a $15US part and simple to replace once the pan is down off the car.

Check www.thectsc.com, they have parts and instructions for working on ZF transmissions, should have everything you need to get the job done properly (including the hard to find LifeGuard6 fluid for the transmission).

Depending on your 323i's vin number you won't be able to use the ZF transmission parts. As some of the transmissions from the 323i and 328i are made by GM. So you'll have to be careful before buying any parts!

Good to know, thanks DimSum. Here I thought you only knew about coding.... BMW using transmissions made by GM, I'm not surprised but I am disappointed a bit (sorry GM).

PM me your VIN number and I'll look up the transmission for you.

BMW used ZF transmissions in the 2006 models, and switched to GM from 2007+ for the 323i and 328i, using only ZF in the 335i.

Haha I'm an E90 specialist. and willing to help!

If you want to check if your transmission is ZF or GM, you can go to REALOEM.COM and type in the last 7 digits of your vin number and it will pull up the information which part numbers and whatnot you'll need.

I confirmed it is a ZF transmission in the car (the car has a 04/2006 build date).

You can use the information I posted earlier to fix the leaks on the transmission. You have a 6HP19 transmission.

What is the part # for the mechatronics sealing sleeve? I have an 2006 330i. Is this part of the filter/pan kit? Also, is there any difference between ZF pan/filter OEM vs BMW genuine because there is a huge cost difference.

There's no difference between the BMW part and the ZF part other than the BMW parts sticker/number on the pan. Save yourself the money and get the kit from CSTC.

All you need for the job is:

http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...d=187&parent=7

Which is the oil change kit for your transmission, with ZF (not BMW branded) parts. The kit comes with a complete pan (with magnets, gasket, drain plug, o-ring), 6 litres of fluid (I ordered a little bit more).

As far as the sealing sleeve, I don't see it listed on their site at the moment. They tend to pull things from the website if they don't have it in stock. I would send them an email, Klaus should get back with you and let you know when it'll be back in stock.

I also ordered a new set of screws for the pan, you don't have to, but I figured since I'm replacing most of the parts, why not replace all the screws too. Although, you may want to order a couple as spares in case any snap during removal if you don't order a full set.

Thank you for the info!

So the CTSC kit pan/filter is ZF OEM? Is made by ZF or an aftermarket part? Will it fit perfectly? Just need to know before I order it from Canada and pay for shipping.
