Had a play with a C63 amg on the A3

Coming back from the Goodwood last Sunday on the A3 there was a Merc behind me for a few miles. The road cleared & he pulled over to the middle & we were level pegging for a while. (he crept past me & I crept past me etc.etc - thats when I noticed the 4 exhausts & the AMG badge)

The road was fairly busy & neither of us were really going for it or speeding but then whilst alongside me he floored it on a downhill section (you could really hear it & even my Mrs. commented on the noise) Being aware it was a c63 I thought best not get into a duel with one of those but whilst I was thinking that my right foot reacted instintively & the pedal was buried........

Only lasted about 10 seconds but I think I was keeping up considering he went for it 1st. As I remember it he was a cars length ahead of me when before I reacted & after the short duel we were level. Probably went from 50 to a ton ish

I think he was a bit shocked & I think I was too.

Not exactly a drag race as such but I was quite proud of me 335d (emaps)

It's funny how your right foot reacts instinctively!!

I had a similar encounter with a 911, he could'nt believe my 335i saloon just pasted him either.

C63 is a serious machine tho, any chance he was in the wrong gear? Or was his missus in the passenger seat? This is what usually puts an end to my fun!!

Yes, a 335D is quick, very quick in fact - a re-mapped one obviously quicker still

BUT

It is never gonna beat a C63 AMG Merc!!!!!

The driver really can't have been trying that hard. I had a 'play' with Andrew (Palmnuts) last year at the Stafford meet and on one very long, ahem private straight stretch of road I absolutely ragged my M3 to it's limit - 8400RPM in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.... and Andy's Merc was as though it was glued to my rear bumper. When we stopped he did say that he had to give it plenty but at times was lifting off slightly as he had more power than me.

That was the closest 'contest' I have had with two comparable cars that I knew were being driven properly and at their limit. This was prob from 40mph to 140mph - I agree a 335D would be still there having some fun, but it certainly wouldn't have been glued to our back bumpers. JLR will testify this as his AMG rag top took a while to catch us up

No doubt the Merc is a little quicker.... It would have been irresponsible for you to take it too hard into corners though as you'd have a big crash behind you on your conscience

No offence intended, obviously lol!

I had a similar slip of the right foot a couple of weeks ago (was too ashamed of myself to mention it before ).

The car in front was a a 635d and we just both floored it at the same time... it wasn't until we'd got all the way to the next roundabout that we both noticed a beat bobby eventually puff and wheeze up behind us in his Ford Focus

Thankfully, he didn't have any recording equipment with him

I haven't exceeding any prevailing limits since, which just goes to show that a stern ticking off from a law enforcement officer is jolly effective

The 335d only just gets into it's stride at 100mph, they are at there best 100-160!!

But, I've driven a 335d at the pod. They MONSTER re-mapped 335d's. The driver clearly wasn't tryin' or couldn't drive!

Palmbollox could never beat a 13.8 1/4mile in his E92 M3 but did a 12.7 at his first attempt in the C63.

I was alongside him, OUTLAUNCHED him by a car length but he pulled past with east.

I posted a 13.1 that run, he did 12.7, the car is capable of a 12.4-12.5 easy!

Also Paul H, I kept up with plenty of standard E92 M3's on the road!!

steve Hoops modded M3 pulled 4-5 car lengths 60-160 on Autobahn. I was impressed with the BIG D

I had a run in a few weeks ago one evening with amg c63 on the A34. we were the only cars on the road (dual carriage way) and unbelievably from each round about exit we were neck and neck on the straights until around 90when he started to get the legs on me.

I'm in an Evolve mapped E92 335i, yes i was as surprised as he was and yes he was giving it the full beans.

AMG C63 is an immensely powerful car but it's also lardy bastard which hurts it when pulling from low down. Each time we were leaving the roundabouts we were pulling up the straights from 20mph.

As i said it was a Sunday eve on a deserted section of dual carriageway so please no irresponsible comments. I dont drive a 335i for the badge i like to drive it when the road and conditions permit.

The difference between a fast car and a very fast car is not as big as people think in terms of speed difference in small blasts.

Over a short burst the difference between the cars might only be a few MPH to which many people is just about keeping up.

My car has been "adjusted" by emaps, has a sports air filter & diesel particle filter removed which I'm sure reduces the turbo to almost zero. Throttle response is amazing & if you get it just right, & I mean just right it can frighten an unsuspecting passenger. Some times when you take an Island fast my Mrs cries out whilst I am thinking "whats up ? that wasnt that fast" but it always feels faster as a passenger doesnt it.

Simon of emaps said it shouldnt make anymore torque with having the particle filter off as the torque is restricted to a certain ammount to protect the gearbox but could make more bhp than usual. When he set it up he was amazed how low the exhaust gas temperature & pressure was without the DPF attached.

The noise, for a diesel, is good (from the outside) still muted inside but you can tell the filter has been removed & the turbos dont half whistle & not cos they are noisey. Without the DPF attached you can just hear them better which was instantly obvious when it was removed. On the day it was removed it was last year in all the snow & snow does tend to mute a car to some degree but it really felt like it had a sport exhaust on after the DPF filter came off.

The C63 would, I'm sure have had me but he was deffo going for it (I was surprised just how loud it was at full chat - just didnt expect that noise from a merc saloon, even an amg) He was def maxing it.

Mate I kept up with a F430 once, the driver was obviosly shot.

Also I have always found cars to feel quicker when driving them
over being a passenger.

How, in the name of God, can you possibly know that?

These "my car kept up with"/"my car destroyed" threads are always a bit of fun reading but you have no way of knowing how hard the other guy was trying or if he was in the correct gear etc. You also don't know how decent/poor a driver they are. Ultimately, it's an exercise and unquantifiable willy waving.
