6FL vs Dealer IPOD interface question

The command Interface via I-Drive on the 6FL is much nicer than the existing dealer installed one. Is it technically impossible to achieve that in the earlier (pre March) generation? I'm referring to having the display show "playlists" vs CD1,2 etc and the 255 limits etc. I understand the physical difference (of having a usb cable) cannot be retrofitted easily but I'm wondering about the software.

Not possible. I believe the hardware is new as of March to allow this input without using the CD changer port.
