Uh Oh... I think it's starting

Or not...
My new 335i is starting to take a while to turn over. Sometimes when I press the start button, the car will take a few seconds before the motor finally kicks in.
I wonder if this is the start of a fuel pump issue

That's one of the symptoms. Hopefully it's just the DME and that the new software can fix it. If not.. fuel pump needs to be replaced

That's what is happening to me. Also the car runs REALLY rough sometimes. I've taken it to BMW and they told me it was a software problem and they need it for a day (booked in 2 weeks time). If the car runs rough I stop and restart the car and the problem resolves. They said it was still ok to drive but I'm not so sure....

I have this same issue. I think it's the fuel pump *however*, I've been using Sunoco 94, which is 10% ethanol. I switched to 91 (5% ethanol) and the car has been acting better (firing up more quickly). I dunno, might be all in my head.

I thought it was dirty fuel at first but a fresh tank didn't resolve the issue (I use Shell V-Power 98 octane- i think it's equivalent to 93 or 94 octane in the states). I really hope it's not the fuel pump but in some ways it may be better than a software issue which may open up a pandora's box of electronic control issues.

I'm not sure that 5% or even 10% ethanol is going to give you these issues. The ethanol acts a bit like an octane booster anyway which is what BMWs love (ie high octane fuel).

It's sad to be so proud and happy with the new car and have this happen.

BTW how many kms/miles have your cars done when the problems began? My Car started having problems at around 6300kms/3940miles.

Well I use Tier 1 gas (premium) and I only have about 1400 miles on the odometer

Please update if/when you know the cause. You mentioned on another thread that your 335 has a Jan 07 production correct? If so, this might be the first case of FP failure in an 07'.

I have the same issue on my Jan 07 build 335i AT. Took it to the dealer the other day because the car would crank over a few times before starting up just like this other owner. It's more noticeable when the car is cold and has been sitting for awhile.

Btw dealer said they sent info the bmw to review and will let me know tuesday.

YES!!!! Exactly what my issue is.
Notice it more when the car sits overnight. In the morning I crank her up and it just sits there and tries to start. I am going to record the audio so my SA knows it happens. With my luck, I'll go over there and they'll say that they can't reproduce the problem.
I'd really hate to wait until the pump actually dies

Another Jan. build date here. Having semi-similar symptoms. Although it's more of a what I feel is "normal" cranking. Similar to the way a turn-key ignition is.

I'm thinking if there is an issue, it's no longer the fuel pump and a pressure regulator is the culprit.

That's what I have going on as well but how do you know it's the fuel pump?

ONLY 1400 miles? That's really bad luck buddy.

I think I will have to inform BMW here in OZ to the potential fuel pump issue so they can order one from Germany just in case, so there's no delay when I take it in in a couple of weeks. Have you taken yours in to be checked out yet?

Ive been using 93 from Sunoco always in my car. Never had an issue yet.

Ive also run it down to fumes once (was out in NJ and I found myself on the express lane of I-80 by accident..and there are no exits for like 15 miles), so I was creeping along at 55mph trying to conserve all gas until I got to the next exit. No issues either..

That's exactly how my car exhibited its first symptoms of the high pressure fuel pump failure. When I brought it in, it was the extended crank only on cold start up. Then it began doing it more frequently, after only letting it sit for a couple hours. They gave it back to me, and the next day the pump completely failed and the car is not drivable. August build, 6,000 miles exactly.

It's been in the shop for over a month now....waiting for a pump. And still no word when one might even be shipped.

I actually have an appt on tomorrow.
I also made some recordings of my car trying to start on my camera phone so they can't tell me that they can't reproduce the problem.

The thing I hate is the thought that I will have to wait an ungodly amount of time before I get her back.

Same thing happened to me and yes my car's in the shop waiting for a new fuel pump as we speak. From what I know there's no real way to really determine if your car's got a bad fuel pump unless you pay attention to the symptoms of a bad fuel pump or if you have it plugged into the computer at the dealer. On the computer, there will be an error code that will appear. Although I'm not sure if the error will show up when your car has a hard start only and if you don't have an engine warning light. Has your check engine light lit up already?

Things I experienced before my fuel pump died.
(1) Hard starting (takes a while to start the car, just like in the video)
(2) hesitations when I accelerate
(3) limp mode (limited power)
(4) rough idling on neutral (engine shakes the car like a farm tractor)

Oct 2006 build here. 1.2k miles on the odo. Still so new

I just hope that the car I get from them while it's being fixed is half decent like a 130i or an X5 (just to try it), but somehow it doubt it.

I have had all those except limp mode but I have also had:
(5) Throttle sticking- esp in the morning.

I found that whatever the problem (so far), it goes away by stopping and restarting the engine.
