Why must a new battery be coded by the dealer

I have a 2006 BMW 325i. I need to purchase a new battery. I thought I could just buy one and install it. Now I am hearing I will have to take it to the dealership to get coded.

Is this true? Can someone shed some light and what is the best battery to buy?

Lots of threads on this topic, here is one of the more interesting ones. Also check DIY section, you will see batteries that people have used for replacement. The battery doesn' get coded, instead the car is told it has a new battery.

You need to register the battery - this tells your electrical system that you have a new battery and adjusts the amount of charge that the battery receives (or something along those lines). It doesn't have to be done at the dealer.

Here are the DIYs:
Changing the battery:

Registering the battery:

Edit: Nice link from Jsublime; tells you EXACTLY why you want to register the battery.

If you replace like with like, then you need do nothing with the registration ('coding').

When the old battery is shot and the replacement is new, how is that "like for like"?

Get any new battery registered so that it plays nice with the IBS.
