Swirl flap issue was where the inlet manifold would self destruct, the engine would suck it up and you'd kiss goodbye to the block.
AFAIK this was rectified in late 2004 though so this 05 model should be OK? I'm far from an expert though..

Blimey.. i never knew that!!
My old 330d touring was fine luckily (04 plate) well bar the whole blowing a gearbox incident - which warranty direct paid out for! Test driven a few cars of late - but realised that i become a torque-whore (no other way to put it!!!)

To be fair, it's not like it happened to every car. Or even 2% of cars. But when you search for views online you tend to get the 1 person in 500 with the problem rather than all the others who only ever experienced happy motoring and didn't feel the need to post up to say "My car isn't broken, gents!"

Not gone off the mazda - and for £7k its amazing value.
Thoughts are at the mo: £5k - integra type r - though one i test drive wasnt blown away by £7k - mazda MPS - loved the test drive 4wd, power - but 15mpg round town??? £9k - 330d coupe - loved my 330d touring ..sold it for £7400 with 124k on it ... but 05 plate - just before new shape came out - will drop in value loads. Prob aim to keep this next car for 2-3 yrs... though my track record suggests it wont be around by xmas! EDIT:: Just been offered an 06 MPS for £5k!!! Thats a LOT of car for the money... now im tempted big time by the MPS - £4k saving buys a lot of fuel!

I'd personally get a 330i instead of the 330d, mpg still pretty good (I always got 32mpg but I ragged it everything), lovely smooth engine and great sound. But that's just me .

Erm, I'm now doubting myself with my claim, I might have got mixed up but now I'm confusing myself. Anyone else throw in their input from their E46 330i ownership . Might have been 24mpg actually as an average but got 32 on a longer trip . Whatever it was it was better than an MPS .

MPS is a mindfeck!! Lovely car, ticks boxes... 20mpg around town... and only runs on super otherwise it doesnt drive smoothly!
I can see why the car drops in price so much!

Great cars. My current 330cd has been a cracking car to own. It's currently on 102k miles and going better than ever. Sure I've spent a few quid on it; new clutch, swirl flap blankers, service, full M3 interior etc etc, but it's a fantastic all rounder. Always get 500+ miles from a tank of juice and it's certainly not a slow car.

MattOz - i think part of this desire for one is i miss my old 330d touring.
Think i might pop and see the 330d soon... yep its a few quid more, but ill get a lot of it back when i do come to sell it. Think the mazda will be hard to shift.

You can't go too far wrong with a 330d in my experience. I did have one that ate a swirl flap, but it was sorted under warranty. |

Hmm.. i do like the idea of a black car with a red leather M3 interior...
Guess i should focus on finding a car first before worrying about changing its interior!!
