iDrive burn in?
Does anyone know if there is any issue with burn in on the iDrive system? Perhaps someone who has had one for a while or a BMW tech? Obviously any screen can have burn in but should I be concerned and be turning off my iDrive screen whenever I have the chance?

No LCD's don't burn in. The phoshors in CRTs burn in. LCD is immune.

I used to sell TV's and my understanding is that there is burn in on any TV. The old Plasma sets had it more than LCD but if you leave a static image on any screen you will get burn in.

Really? I thought LCDs are immune from burn in as said before? The things that go wrong with LCD is that pixels might go dead...or the backlighting lamp may dim or die out.
I know that CRT (old TVs) and plasmas can get burn in tho... |

LCDs don't permanently burn in like CRTs do. They can get "image persistence," which is easy to correct (usually by showing a white or bright solid color for about 15 minutes).
http://compreviews.about.com/od/moni.../LCDBurnIn.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Persistence To the OP - I wouldn't worry about it on the iDrive. I suppose if you left it on the welcome screen ALL the time, you could get image persistence, but switching to the map for a while should clear it up.

Sorry man, I know you want to find a problem here LCD is a completely different technology that CRTs and Plasmas. Even the description of "image persistence" is restricted to much earlier generation or cheap LCD displays. Neither of which are found on your BMW.

LCD can’t turn off! When you select to turn off the screen with the iDrive it only shows a dark black color. The one and only way to turn off the screen is to kill the power source. My recommendations are not to worry about the screen. I’m a computer technician I work with LCD’s all the time.
