hey guys, my service engine soon light came on the dash today and the car seems a little funny (loss of power and idling roughly) while driving so I was wondering if there are any shops that you guys would recommend taking the car to near queens, ny. i live in astoria so the closer the better. any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hahah, sure I'll explain. I just got home from work and was a bit lazy.

Anyways, usually when you're running rough and loss of power along with CEL means misfiring.

You won't know exactly until you scan your car for codes. Have your car scanned and if it is misfires, should be an easy fix. I would offer to scan your car (i'm in bayside) but my friend has my scanner and he's upstate.

And if it is misfiring, you can diagnosis it pretty easy.

Thanks for that, make a lot more sense now haha

i just came across a thread abt coil failures and was wondering if this could also be a possiblilty since it seems like a common problem with the NA engine. maybe?

Yea. Misfires are caused typically by bad coil packs OR spark plugs. I'd place my money IF it is misfires, that it'd be coilpacks.

Diagnosing to determine if it is a coilpack issue is pretty straight forward.

-Scan the car for codes, if it is misfiring, it will tell you which cylinder.
-Remove the coilpack from the misfiring cylinder and swap it with an adjacent one.
-If the misfiring happens with the other cylinder, then you know it's the coilpacks.

ORRR

If you want to do it the old school way and determine if your coilpack's are OK, you can do this without a code scanner.

Just simply unplug each coilpack wire ONE AT A TIME, plugging back in after each cylinder.

If your engine has a reaction; sputter, sounds strained, then that coilpack is fine. If it DOES NOT have a reaction, that coilpack is toast.

Also, autozone has free code scanning. Just take their codes and google it to get more defined answer.

Well, I haven't removed any 330's engine cowls but I figure...

-30 mins for engine cowl R/R
-30 mins for R/R Coilpacks
-30 mins for diagnostic
-30 mins misc.
Labor: I can't imagine more than 2-2.5 hours for a competent shop..
Parts: 60 bucks for 1 coil ---http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=VB33&mospid=48523&btnr=12_1417& hg=12&fg=05

So you're probably out 250-300 bucks to get this fixed. IF IT is the coil issue.
OR
you can DIY and get it fixed for under 100

I definitely recommend getting the codes scanned.

ive been to all three, impressive for paint, matt for suspension and brakes, and motorcepts for for maintenance, and I would recommend them all. However, Motorcepts would be your best bet on the weekends.
