FFX BMW told me need replace both turbos...any advice??
As per title, had reduced engine power warning message so got car checked out today and told need both turbos replaced. Quoted $5800. Have a '07 with 51k miles that's been out of warranty since 10/10.
Searching so far have been able to find that ebay may be an option for used turbos cheap or that tischer has them for ~$635 each. Anyone w/ some advice on what to do? Which local shops would you recommend to install (any any idea on price)? Should I have indy shop confirm that turbos need replacement? Don't want to do any upgrading really, because at this point planning to sell car as soon as up and running. Thanks a ton in advance!! |

cotmfk is selling his cores for the turbos and Clem (Adam) is a great installer.
Other option, get new RBs and have a much faster 335i :-p. |

OEM turbos from Tischer:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=550485 +1 on having Clem install. I believe he did an RB install not too long ago.

Thanks Tibra1, that's the best price I've seen by far for new turbos. I PM'd Clem about the install. Would he be able to tell me if the turbos actually need replacing? Car seems to run fine despite the warning message. I had a new SA at FFX BMW today and just am not fully confident in her.

Did they tell you any detail on what parts were failing on the turbos?

Get a second opinion and find someone with a scan tool to pull the error code

They are keeping car to replace the HPFP (b/c of recall) and said I should have it back tomorrow. They are charging me $150 for diagnosis so I will definitely insist on details.
Since car seems to be driving fine, will definitely get 2nd opinion, but where would you guys go? Don't want to rack up too much cost on diagnostic workups either. |

RB Turbos aren't too much more expensive but totally worth imho, if I were in your situation!

Contact BMW NA and tell them your situation, given that you just went over 50k I think they'd be willing to help you out.

The turbos I am selling should not go into your car. They should be used as cores if you want to to a turbo upgrade, or complete rebuild of stockers. That said, if you don't want to have your car down while turbos are being rebuilt, you could buy mine as cores for someone to rebuild.
Clem can help you on the install part. It sounds like you want the cheapest, most asap solution. In that case, I would price out the stockers plus install. Shop around for quotes on the install. Clem was a good price, plus the knowledge base I was getting and the fact that I was able to be there and help out/learn. Tischer (through getbmwparts.com) has a good deal for stock turbos, or you could try the link someone put up in this thread. Ordering upgraded turbos will take time (3-5 months, maybe a bit less now, but still not instant). Do you have wastegate rattle? Any mods? It was the wastegate rattle/actuators that did my stock snails in.

It may be normal. They might opt to change the actuators but I personally could never get them to do it... despite the # of trips and different SAs I've tried.

As far as dealers replacing turbos, I have heard mixed results. Some people say the dealer tells them it's "normal," and can't get anything out of them. Others say the dealer replaces part after part to try and fix the issue. Good luck!

SA just called me and said she is on the phone with BMW OF NA to discuss the next step to fix this rattling. Then the SA calls me back again and tells me that they cant hear the noise, and that I would have to wait until they can hear it better before they can take action. So long story short they want it to be a bigger problem before they can take action. |

I will only be using stock turbos..even if mine were to crap out..2 reasons..
1) My tune doesnt support upgraded turbos.. 2) I dont feel the RBs have worked out all the bugs with their turbos..still reading about too many issues w them Honestly at $550/ea for stock turbos..i will just go w those..my 2cents |

So has the issue been attributed to flaws in the turbos or in the usage of a catch can in conjunction with the RB's? What exactly is the problem?
