335i - Clutch Delay Valve Replacement
Hi all,
Decided to keep the 335i (rubbish values and I can't be bothered to sell it privately), so I've decided to do a few 'mods'. I want to start with the CDV replacement - I've always had an issue with 1st and 2nd gear and I reckon this will help. That said, I have a couple of questions. Is it better to modify a standard valve by buying a new one from a dealer, or is it better to purchase an already modified one? If the latter, where can I get one from? Does anyone know anywhere in Essex that could do the change for me without me having to explain exactly what it is that I want doing?! Many thanks Ian |

Juiced Up Tuning are supposed to be able to get them.
However, I contacted them nearly three weeks ago via their '1st class email system' (they don't do phones) to see if they could supply one for the 320d but as yet no answer... ![]() |

It is indeed worth doing.
Did the same to my S2000 too as they have a muppet valve. Odd thing for Birds to say as they have customers who track and strip regularly. Saves a LOT of clutch wear, and the engagement is more predictable.

Great stuff, thanks v much, i'll order one asap. Not really confident about doing it myself, so I assume any competent mechanic/garage should be able to fit it?
Thanks again. Ian |

Its a 1/10 job IMO.
remove plastic cover, pull out two spring clips and swap the parts. Bleed the fluid, cover back on and go home. 1hr all in, 30min if you have a lift and experience.

Took a matter of minutes when I had mine removed so I imagine replacement is much the same.
I found the biggest difference was as M1BJR mentions, it's far more predictable whereas before I never quite knew when and how it would bite. |

They did it for me a year ago...all they said was that opinions vary. IMHO you simply cannot engage the clutch precisely without modding it. I also think this should always be done in pair with a clutch stop - best mod 5$ can buy

I was being a little mischievous Neil. Don't worry about it.
The CDV is on my list of things to do. I've read good things about replacing/removing and originally came across it when I was searching for a solution to my juddering clutch. As it turned out the clutch was duff and I had it replaced under warranty. The CDV just went to the back of the queue after that but that doesn't mean I'm entirely happy with BMW fitting the 'muppet' valve as someone else referred to it. I never feel as if I've got complete control over the clutch bite and engagement. If replacing alters this then I'll be in touch with Neil. |

The main thing seems to be warranty and appearance but I think I read on one or two models removal altogether was tricky. I might have dreamt that though.

The CDV is identical and the only way would be to remove the CDV and check the size of the hole. |

I should have said, had the replacement valve fitted and the clutch does indeed feel better. As m1bjr said the action of the clutch is much more predictable. I can feel a proper bite rather than the rather woolly engagement it was before.

Out of interest what was the cost of the work?
I contacted a local indie about removing it, they had no idea what i was talking about and never got back to me. I'll prob wait until service time then add it to their list of works. |
