JB speed e90 LCI splitters problem

I bought the splitters for an e90 LCI but when I used the tape they sent me (double sided gray) the splitters holds on for a few seconds, then pops out. Its like the force of the curve or somethings prevents the tape from sticking good. I pressed firmly for about 1 minute but it falls.

I followed the diy guides that tell where to put tape and all that but nothing
What are my options? sand some 260$ splitters. I have no experience at sanding and the possible "side effects"
thanks guys!

if u dont mind it being "permanently" attached... use betalink and attach the splitters on. then use tape to hold it against the bumper and leave it like that for an hour or more. shit wont come off even if u want it to later. lol

Well, you can always use extra double tape or have it glued by a bodyshop

Still have not mounted the splitters
Considering buying Betalink but not sure because of the "permanent" or damage when you remove them.

Should I Fu*# it and use betalink or sell the splitters (cost $260) and look into other mods for the bumper?

please help.
ty!

1) Take out the old double sided tape in the splitter

2) Apply new one, peel the plastic off the new double sided tape

3) spray some windex on your index finger (this will prevent the double sided tape to stick right away giving you a chance to line everything up)

4 ) give the double sided take a nice little rub with the windexed finger (not too much though! just enough so its barely slick)

5) now adjust the splitter the way you want it, hold it in place, the windex will evaporate and the tape will stick

6) enjoy splitters

I have done this method on 3 variations of splitters already, e90 pre-lci splitters, pre-lci M-tech splitters, and now my e90 lci M-tech splitters and each time it worked like a charm.

Another tip is, I see a slight contour on your bumper. Apply the tape more heavily at the beginning and end of the splitter and more lightly around the top and maybe a little more at the bottom. Betalink is good stuff, but its also really nasty stuff. I betalkinked a lip onto a bumper once. I had to get the bumper repainted when I removed the lip.

The double sided tape from jbspeed for this is horrible. You need to go buy the 3m automotive trim tape from autozone or somewhere. I sanded the splitters in the back so that it is smooth...this is a must or else the tape won't stick as well. I also bought some 3m adhesive promoter off amazon.

1. Clean bumper and splitter surfaces.
2. Apply tape to the bumper. I used the whole roll.
3. Apply tape to the bottom of the splitter (close to the 2 screw holes)
4. Rub adhesive promoter on one splitter and wait a minute.
5. Then apply from the side of the bumper to the middle.
6. Hold it down for 1 minute especially on the sides.
7. Repeat for other side.

Its been holding well. Freeway speeds are fine.

I sanded with 400 grit and until it felt smooth with less dimples and bumps. The adhesive promoter i got from amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotch-Adhe...8898264&sr=8-1

I bought 2 packets and used 1 for each side. Basically rub it over the splitter where the tape is going to go and wait about a minute for it to settle and then install to the bumper.

did you de-wax the surface first? (i know it might seem like a dumb question, but unless you prep the surface, it won't stick even with different material 'sticky')

Use some dish detergent to remove the layer of wax to get down to the sealer underneath... lightly buff the area to smooth the sealer around or thin it out as much as possible to have the adhesive stick to the clear coat...

**i'm not sure if this is in the DIY, but it's what i would do first either way

as mentioned above, a light sanding might be in order, but i wouldn't go as heavy as 400 grit... that seems a bit extreme and will definitely ruin the paint underneath (unless you plan on keeping the car forever, don't do this)... go no rougher than 2500grit or 3000grit... this gives a hazy-polished appearance, but still gives the right amount of bare surface to stick the adhesive to.

greetings "wachupita" - i hope all is well

not to your call for help ... i am bouncing back and forth with JBSpeed or e90-lightning's splitter ... did you check into both of the vendors products ... or did any of you savy gents out there have any recommendations which product to purchase (JB or e90)

with regard to your splitter modification, i contacted "gaifaun" with a few question regarding his installation of the splitters ... very helpful member

please keep us in the loop with your mod

happy trails

Just to be clear, are you talking about sanding the bumper itself? If so, I did it to the splitters only, and not the bumper paint. Anyway, yes use detergent or alcohol wipes to get ride of any wax.

Yes, i'm talking about sanding the bumper itself... a 3000grit would be fine, it would polish it through the sealer in the least...

i'm not sure of the adhesive properties of sealant, it may or may not stick until you reach the actual clear coat (which is like 20 extra seconds with an orbital polisher...)

Ok yeah. I wouldn't even think of sanding the bumper. Sand the splitters with what ever until you think it is smooth enough. The tape attaches fine to the bumper with a clean wax-free surface.

okay, well just experiment with what you can... just consider all the attaching surfaces whatever you decide
