Bluetooth phones without iDrive

I did some searching but everything regarding bluetooth seems to be discussing it using iDrive.

I know it's a little after the fact since my car just finished production, but you don't need idrive to use bluetooth, right? I did get the premium pkg.

I have a motorola q that has built-in voice commands. On my last car where I installed a Parrot hands-free device, when I pressed the activate button on the device, it immediately started voice activation on my phone and I could say a person's name and it would dial the number.

Anyone familiar with this and know if it will function the same way on the e92?

Thanks.

I can verify that you don't need idrive to use bluetooth. Not sure on the voice activation question.

Yeah, Im using my bluetooth phone without iDrive also. Unfortunately, I uploaded some software update to my phone that everytime I try to use the voice recognition, it restarts. It should be able to do it though.

You can use Bluetooth without iDrive, but the voice commands will be much more limited. With iDrive, it will recognize your voice to dial any names downloaded from your phone's addressbook to the car. Without iDrive, you will have to program the name into the car itself in order for it to recognize the corresponding voice command. The car will still recognize individual numbers even without iDrive (i.e., dial 5-5-5-1-2-1-2).

So does the address book from the phone not download to the car so that you can easily scroll through it?

The address book will download to the car and you can scroll through the numbers on the stereo display. However, without iDrive, you will not be able to access the numbers via voice commands (i.e., call "Home") until you program them into the car.

Programming telephone for voice activation

My adress book loaded and the voice recognition works if I tell it to dial a number. How do you program the car so you can "call home" w/o idrive?

You have to set it up with your voice through the voice recognition. You program it in w/ "home" as the name and add the # so when you say "home" it will dial it.

Bluetooth does work...but as listed above you can only dial names and numbers. The owners manual does not cover how to do this...it is in a separate manual. Be advised...the commands were not 100% correct. Ie...the book said one thing...and it didn't work...so I pushed the voice button on the steering column and said "help". It then read all the voice commands that are acceptable. Can't remember what it was...I think the car accepts "Dial Name" but the books tells you to say "Phone name". Something like that.

I was just out in the car tonight messing with the "Voice phone book" and I noticed the same thing. The manual says to say "Store name" but you actually have to say "Save name." Then when you are done saying the name & number it asks you if you want to continue... the manual says to say "Store number" but this didn't work. Through trial and error I found that saying "Save" works.

So the section for Storing an entry should say:
  1. Say: "Save name"
  2. Say the name
  3. Say the phone number
  4. Say "Save"

I was also a little irritated that after I had stored "Linda" it would not let me store "Lynn". It was convinced they were the same name.

Having said that, the feature is quite cool. A little inconvenient to have to manually program the voice names & numbers even though they are already in your phone book, but that takes a couple minutes and you're good to go!

Good info. Getting a new Motorola Razr next week and the info you just provided will enable me to successfully program the phone

Can you add voice dial entries to the car's phone book after downloading entries from your phone?

Sure can. All the voice dial entries I added were entries that were already in the phone's contact list, and that worked fine... it does also recognize that it matches a phone book entry (like if you tell it to dial Mike, "Calling Mike" will show up on the display, assuming "Mike" is how you have it listed in your phone book).

Sorry, I wasn't very clear with my question. Can you use BT to transfer the numbers from the phone to the car, then edit the entries on the car to attach a voice dial name to it, or do you have to program the voice dial + number into the car completely separately?

Basically I don't want to reprogram every number in my phone into the car (there's a lot of them...)

Exactly correct. Perfectly answered! Actually, there is some advantage to programming the names in the non-iDrive car because you can use different short nicknames. iDrive voice commands sometimes have trouble interpreting the phone book native entries... and it's a pain when you have three numbers listed for a name... etc. I have one car with, and one without...

As far as I know you have to do it separately. If you figure out how to do it otherwise, let me know!

You hopefully did research on your car before you bought it, now do research on phones. The razr is 2yr old garbage. There's better phones that sync with the car.
