Cobb has me confused:

From what I understand, cobb can fully erase codes. However, upon research, they can only remove codes in the ECU not the BLACK BOX or DME.

Therefore overboost codes and other traces will be left in those areas flashing to be caught. Cobb CANNOT erase/ clear the dme or black box and that is a fact that I learned over the phone.
Can the bt tool erase the parts of the DME and BLACK BOX that cobb is UNABLE to clear?

Thanks

Who told you they can't and where is this black box located?
The person who told you, should probably know where these values are logged. So where are they logged?
I know for trucks, semis they store logg values for everything, and they logg a lot.
No tuning solution get's past them. Granted it's a lot more money so they are likely to look harder.

And as Kamal said, DME is the same thing as ECU.

Lot's of comments on things they can't do. Weird since they have been in market since early 2011. Others still have problems and release updates every now and then, having sold tunes for a lot longer than that for the n54's.

Cobb, piggybacks, bt cable, they all clear all codes/shadowcodes in the dme/ecu. If this wasnt the case half people here would have lost their warranty.

Not only has this been answered countless times, but this thread should just be deleted. Granted, deleting useless threads would require a full time job on here by the moderators. But, when you login to the forum and see, "Cobb has me feeling confused" as the first thread, it's an instant negative impact against Cobb. A forum member has to dig their way into the thread to find out it really isn't negative, and folks working for Cobb need to play nice and cover their asses and calm things down because folks can't take the time to read.

Welcome to e90post I guess! :sigh :

WUT

I think you are confused. DME = ECU. I don't know what "black box" you are talking about and no piggyback stores codes in the black box etc...

Codes are triggered in the DME/ECU and can only be erased in the same area. All the piggys, Cobb and the BT tool can clear these codes now.

I don't pretend anything...I pay attention. If you're seriously worried about over-reving your car or doing a money shift, that's your own fault and not the tune. Why don't you do more research (and use the search feature) rather than starting more threads that have been answered hundreds of times.

I could be wrong, but the black box is part of the ECU that stores in a different bank. With that being said, it would take something really serious like violating a rev limit or doing a money shift to be held against you. Again, that wouldn't be the tunes fault, but rather driver error. If your local dealer sent your ECU to BMW, I'm sure there is a chance they could find anything. (I'm speculating on that, but it seems reasonable to me.)

Usually, it takes something really big for your local dealership to send the ECU to BMW. I've brought my car in for several issues and always uninstall my Cobb AP before hand. The last time they spent a whole day doing diagnostics on my car and found nothing related to the tune or any codes from it.

I was fairly sure, but I sent an e-mail to Terry of Burger Motorsports. His response regarding ECU, Black box logging of the JB4 was fairly simple:

JB4 has hidden code read/delete built in. No need for BT.

No such thing as black box LOL there are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and shadow diagnostic codes...shadow ones don't show up on your generic code readers as they're BMW only codes...BT tool can read them, procede and jb4 can read them, cobb ap reads them...done...all of these tools/piggies/cobb ap can/will clear ALL codes weather they're shadow or not...no need to worry..

I wanted to weigh in on this, and thank you all for posting. We can indeed clear all codes, present and historic from the ECU/DME.

The stored "historic" codes are what you are referring to those that are logged in the "black box." This means that even if a code is logged/stored etc, it can be cleared as long as you are running our latest BETA firmware update. Check our thread for details on this update and how to go about getting it.

We are still not convinced that there IS indeed a black box as it is being described here. While it is certain that the DME/ECU is able to log codes we now have the ability to clear those codes.

Thanks again and please let us know if you have any other questions.
