shifting in this car seems notchy?

Just picked up my 2008 alpine white 335i mt coupe rwd... And I love it!!! Only thing is I dont know if this is normal or not but when I push the clutch down and put it in the next gear I hear and feel a thunk before I even let off the clutch? And also trying to shift into 2nd from first is dam near impossible to do fast I feel? The car does have a warranty so I'm going to bring it in soon for a nice check up!

Its the Clutch delay valve..do a modified CDV or CDV delete

So thats what it is! lol Its been driving me nuts! The only way I can shift quickly into 2nd gear is if I hold the clutch down for longer then I usually like to keep it down for just to make sure it doesn't grind or kick me out. And so that's what makes the clunk noise before even drop the clutch when I put it into gear right? :

Nope, don't think so. I have 6MT with recent cdv delete, didn't experience anything like that prior of after cdv delete. The CDV (clutch delay valve) simply controls how quickly the clutch engages. Have it looked at.

Yeah I planes on bringing it in regardless just to have everything checked out. But yeah it almost feels like theresan enagement feel before o even let go of the clutch sometimes?

Its not the cdv, our cars just have alot more drivetrain slack than most and that's what you are feeling. I've heard that m3 subframe bushings will almost completely eliminate the problem but I haven't tried it yet since it's not a cheap mod. The bushings are only a couple hundred through tisher but the labor is like 6-700 and you have to have a special BMW tool to get them out... Can't just use a press.

It feels like something is kicking the underside of the trunk right? At about half release of the pedal?

Yeah exactly! I feel it in the trunk region. As soon as I throw the shifter into the gate I feel it, before I even let the clutch out. Still going to bring the car for a check up anyway to be sure. Might as well use the warranty if there's any problems before I start to mod it

I put in the BMW ssk and still strongly dislike the shift feel of this car. The Germans need to study how the Japanese make such slick shift action.

yeah i would have em check it out too. pm me what they say. i was told by them, the dealer i bought it from and alot of people on here that its normal but it just doesnt sound right. i plan on doing the m3 bushing upgrade also. there is a vendor here that rents the tool to remove the bushing i found so i plan on doing that before too long and praying that it fixes the problem!

That's completely normal. Every rear wheel drive manual transmission car I've every driven does it. If you do a search around the web, you'll see that a lot of other RWD cars do it too. From Supras, to IS300s to E46 bmws.

What's happening is that when you push in the clutch from neutral, the input shaft of the transmission is still spinning. As soon as you push the shifter into gear, the synchros make contact and apply torque to the drive shaft. The thump you hear/feel is just the drive shaft moving a bit due to a little slack in the drive train.

If you want to test it out, just push in the clutch and wait a moment for the input shaft to spin down. Then push the stick into gear, and you shouldn't hear the thump.

So I basically have to get use to the feeling right? Also its not bad for the car is it? I like to shift very aggressive it times lol. Also im hoping that UUC SSK, DSSR, and a CDV delete will make the experience more enjoyable. But either way like i said I plan on bringing the car in just for a nice check up so I'll keep you guys posted.

yeah i plan on doing the same. and like i mentioned you can do bushing upgrades to take out slack... i.e. subframe bushings and i'm going to look up others that i can replace to make it more "direct" aswell.

What do you mean by slack? And so you say by changing the subframe bushings I will stop having that feeling of a kick before I even engage?

1-2 in this car is odd, Like Jeff said. I even get a little 1-2 grind on cold starts in winter (but only on the first shift)

CDV removal helps. Trans fluid also.

Yeah first to second is really hard to shift into fast also not to mention like u guys said to do smooth just cruising. I have to baby the shit out of it to catch it, but gears 3 on I can bang into smoothly. Guess I'm going to have to just get used to if because other than that I love this car!!!!
